Jávea Public Library

  Today Thursday, 19 January we are all invited to the Jávea’s Town Public Library for the workshop   “Welcome to Reading”. The idea for this workshop came from a group of parents concerned by the proper development of reading capabilities of the kids at very early age and the importance of this while they are growing.

In addition to this, In order to making young children get interested in reading, there will be , several storytelling sessions  in the framework of the program “Pluja de Contes” (Tales rain) in the following dates:

Friday 27 January at 18:00 h.: The Cinderella

Jávea’s Public Library (located at the old town, Calle Mayor # 9) was built in 1982 in order to house the headquarters of “Jesus of Nazareth” Agricultural Cooperative. This two floors building encloses an spacious inner patio that overlook a set of classical arches.

In addition, younger guests will also enjoy the representation classic theater play “Pinocchio” on Saturday 28 January at 17:00 h at Jávea‘s Casa de Cultura.

Jávea tours in English, German and French

Check below the schedule of guided tours for this year 2012 in Jávea. The Tourism bureau of Jávea has scheduled visits in English, German and French around Old Town in the following dates:

May: there are two scheduled visits, one on Tuesday 8 at 19:00 h.  in German language and  other on Tuesday 22 at the same time but with English speaking guides.

June: all three visits scheduled will be at 19:00h.: Tuesday 5 and June 26 will be in German and Tuesday 12 June in English.

July: There are four scheduled visits in July: Tuesday 10 and 24 July in English and Tuesday 17 and 31 in French.

August: In August there are 3 scheduled tours:  in French on Tuesdays 7 and 14  and in English on Tuesday 21.

September: Tour will be offered in English ( 4 and 18 September) and German (11 and 25 September).

All tours will depart from the Tourist Info Centre Xàbia and will follow the Old Town touristic route. The duration of the activity is about 1 hour and a half.

If you want to participate, you must register in advance at the offices of tourism of Jávea or phone calling to 965794356. The symbolic price of the tour is just € 2 for adults and 1 € for children.

Jayan movie theatre in Jávea

Once again, here we bring you the information about the movie screenings in Jávea’s Jayán Cinema / Sete Segell Film Club during Sundays  (at 19:30 h) and Mondays (20:00 h) in January, when the following films will be offered in original language and Spanish subtitles:

Sunday 15 and Monday 16 January: Another Year (UK 2010), directed by Mike Leigh and starring Jim Broadbent, Lesley Manville and Ruth Sheen. Plot: Ferry and Tom have been happily married for many years, but they are concerned about their son Joe that is still single. Film in English with subtitles in Spanish.

Sunday 22 and Monday 23 January : Wer wenn nicht wir (If Not Us, Who) (Germany 2011). Directed and screenplay by Andres Veiel. In the early sixties, Guthrum and Bernwar live a passionate love story in Western Germany. They believe that the written word is crucial and founded a publishing house dedicated to publishing politics books, but circumstances around them makes them fallow very different paths.

Sunday 29 and Monday 30 January: A Dangerous Method (UK 2011). Film directed by David Cronenberg’s  and starring Keira Knightley, Vigo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender. Film based on true events from the stormy relationship between the young psychiatrist Carl Jung, his mentor Freud and Sabina.

Charity photographic exhibition in Jávea

 Xàbia Photographic Association (www.afxabia.com) has organized a charity exhibition at the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Soler Blasco of Javea, aimed to raise money to help in the purchase and training of an assistance dog for an autistic child of the town.

The members of Xàbia  Photographic Association have selflessly donated their photographs to be displayed at a museum Soler Blasco until 21 January, 2012. People interested in help for this cause can purchase any photographs for € 50.

Those interested in purchasing any of the images exhibited in the museum can get all the information about how to place an order for the pictures in the brochures found t¡in the same exhibition hall. Also it is possible to place the orders via e-mail through afxabia@gmail.com.

the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Soler Blasco of Xàbia is located at Primicias Street # 6, and  is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 h, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays open only in the morning . the museum is closed on Mondays.

The Three Wise Men in Jávea

Like every year, the Three Wise Men have found the time in their busy schedule to visit all the towns along the Costa Blanca, including a very special visit to the town of Javea.

On the occasion of this important visit, the town of Javea has organized several events for both children and grownups.

Tuesday, 3 January, 2012 at 17:00 h., everyone is invited to the theater play “Guyi Guyi” performed by Periferia Theater Group at the Casa de Cultura

Wednesday, 4 January, 2012 at 17:30 h. the “Proclamation of the Royal Pages of Their Majesties the Kings of the East” will take place on in Placeta the

convent (Convent square) in Javea. After the proclamation, the Royal Pages will collect the wish list from all children in town.

Thursday, 5 January, 2012, is the most expected day for all children and adults: the Three Wise Men’s day. This magical day begins with the screening of the Disney Classic film “Blackbeard’s Ghost” at 11:30 h in the House of Culture. Later, at 19:00 h., is scheduled the arrival of Their Majesties The Magi in a spectacular parade through the city from Juan Carlos I Ave. , Avenida de Alicante, Ronda Norte, Príncipe de Asturias and finishing at the Convent square.

This holidays, the Merchants Association of Xàbia Histórica (Old Town) along with the Department of Economic Development of the City of Jávea have everything ready for the “Tapeo Day” in Jávea scheduled for this Friday 30 December, 2011.

The Christmas tapas crawling starts at 20:00 h. with street live music and the best local specialties. The Three Wise Men

Children are the ones who most intensely live the holiday season, especially when Santa Claus and the Three Wise Men come to town. For this reason Jávea town have organized many activities to celebrate these special days and keep everybody entertained during the holidays.

Today, Tuesday 20 December at Xàbia Històrica (Old Town), all children are invited to enjoy the “kids’ Christmas morning” with placement of Christmas cards and singing of carols all around the Old Town.

Also in the Old Town, the Red Cross of Jávea  has set up a Playroom in Casal de Fogueres (En Forn Street). This children playroom will be open on 23 and 30 December from 17:00 to 20:00 h, when -among other activities- kids can write a letter to Santa Claus and the Three Wise Men.

On Friday 30 December at 11:00 you can enjoy in the House of Culture of the free screening of the movie “Merlin el Encantador” (The Sword in the Stone). The screening will be in Spanish language.

From Tuesday 27 to Thursday 29 December, “Nadal Jove” (Young Christmas) event will offer a space for RC cars track, bouncy castles, adventure games and workshops for kids. This event will take place at the “Miguel Buigues Andrés” sports hall. Outside the sports hall there will be an area for teenagers and grown-ups where they can enjoy activities such as skateboarding, Rollerballs, Paintball, Bungee Jumping and Active Extreme Xábia. Christmas market in Javea

Today, Friday 16 December, the Xàbia Professional Music School’s Woodwind Orchestra will perform a Christmas concert by the Orchestra in San Bartolomé Church at 20:00h.

For tomorrow, Saturday 17 December, the Merchant association of Xàbia Histórica and Jávea’s Economic Development Department have organized the following activities in the old town:

11:00 h: Christmas Fun Race. Race in costumes through the old town. Those who wish to participate must be at 10:00 h in the Placeta del Convento (Convent square) to register. great prizes for participants.

From 11:00 until 18:00 h:  International Christmas Market also at Placeta del Convento (Convent square). This International Christmas market will be a display of Christmas customs and typical food and decoration of many residents of Xàbia originally from other countries. Also in this place, Santa Claus will collect letters from children.

18:00 h: Awards ceremony of the Nativity scene contest. Venue: Casa de la Cultura de Jávea.

At 19:30 h, the streets of Xàbia Old Town will witness the “dolçaina and Tabalet” (flute and drums) music event performed by the Colla Xirimitab’s musical group.

21:00 h: Christmas Concert performed by the Choir of Jávea at the Church of San Bartolomé

On Sunday 18 December, the celebration continues in the streets of Jávea with the 27^th edition of the “Turkey” bicycle race of Jávea, departing from the Placeta del Convento at 10:00 h.

Nativity scenes in Jávea

  The traditional Nativity scene of Jávea is already open for the visitors of the Soler Blasco Municipal Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography located at Plaça dels Germans Segarra square # 1 (contact telephone number 96 579 10 98).

The museum’s opening hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 h. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 13:00 h. The museum will close on Mondays.

The reason for locating this year the nativity scene model in the Soler Blasco Museum is because in this way there is no need for glazing the entire scene for protecting it from the weather. With no glass, it would be easier to contemplate the magnificent details of craftsmanship and small details of the figures.

This scale model takes careful detail about several scenarios and traditional Christmas scenes, as the baby Jesus crib, the procession of the Three Wise Men or the daily life of the shepherds.

One of the scheduled events related to Christmas and nativity scenes is the Casa del Cable exhibition about the work done by those attending the courses of  Nativity scene making organized this year.  The other event is the 5^th Jávea’s Nativity Scenes Contest awards ceremony that will take place on Saturday, 17 December at 18:00 h at the Casa de la Cultura, where also will be a christmas carol concert performed by la Rondalla Choral group.

Christmas Fair at the Port of Jávea

Today and tomorrow, Tuesday 6 December, everyone is invited to the Christmas Fair of the Port of Jávea organized by the Association of Merchants and Entrepreneurs of the Aduanes del Mar (ACEAM) in collaboration with the Department of Business Development ofJávea 

During these days, all the shops in the port area will display their products un the streets and will reward their customers who spend more than  € 15 with gift vouchers good for  horse carriage rides, bouncy castle admission and the children attractions installed in the Jaume I square.

You can tell the shops, bars and restaurants taking part in this fair for the red carpet at the front door and some stars located in the showcases.

Among the products available in this fair you can find clothing, jewelry, gifts, decoration items, books, delicatessen and perfumes and services like hairdressers and beauty salons.

Also, the bars and restaurants of the port area will offer special menus during the fair days (until 6 December) from 11:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 h.

You can visit the artisans stalls at Jaume I square, the Etreus witch’s magic shop or have a snack at the Oliva Negra mobile bar, where you can have crepes, soups, hot chocolate and wine.

Christmas Fair Jávea  Port will have a wonderful Christmas decorations, carols and of course the visit of the Three Wise Men, which will collect the Christmas wish lists from the children.

Don’t forget to visit the charity stalls of the Red Cross and Caritas.

Christmas Charity Bazaar in Jávea

On Saturday 26 November 2011, a Christmas Charity Bazaar will be held at the Parador de Jávea from 16:00 to 24:00 hours.

This Christmas bazaar is aimed to raise funds for “Condenados al Bordillo” and “Fembanda” charities and organized by Mediterránea Eventos in collaboration with Jávea Entrepreneur Women and sponsored by the Jávea sculpture Toni Marí Sart, a native of Jávea which will exhibit his work that afternoon. Toni Marí Sar artistic work is based in iron shaped figures that will for sure bring loads of people to the Bazaar.

The event will  start at 16:00 h. and the organization committee promises to offer an evening full of surprises with face painting workshop and exhibition of miscellaneous items and an afternoon where you can taste tea and canapés, a glass of champagne or even one of the new dishes offered by the Parador de Jávea. They have also organized a fall-winter collection fashion show for women and children at 17:30 h., live performance of the “Orfeón de Vergel” Choir at 20:30 h. and the performance of “Atrescuerdas” group at 22:00h. There will be two raffles to raise funds for the charity at 21:30 and 22:30 hours.

The admission to this event (bazaar, exhibitions and performances) is free of charge.

Celia Mur Concert

Next Thursday 24 November at 20:00 h we are going to have the opportunity of enjoy a concert of Celia Mur  in the framework of the Cycle Women, Music and Love, in the Casa de Cultura de Jávea.

Celia Mur is a Spanish singer of jazz and fusion, with modern and flamenco-classical training. She started her adventures in the music inspired by his father, the composer and flamenco guitarist Antonio Moya Fernandez, who guided her in her first contact with the Spanish music and flamenco.

In her performance in Jávea, Celia Mur will present her work “Simpatía” recorded in New York and Zurich, directed a produced by Celia Mur herself  and Swiss pianist Chris Wiesendanger, and with the collaboration of musicians of international relevance, such as Mark Turner, Antonio Sanchez and Ben Street. Celia pays special tribute to her father -the composer Antonio Fernandez De Moya from Granada- through the performing of modern jazz sound hand in hand with flamenco and Brazilian sound.

Mur has just released a new CD of Coplas music with Cadiz flamenco guitarist Nono García.

Certainly Celia Mur is a versatile singer who will make enjoy all those attending her concert in Jávea.

Exhibitions in Jávea

Since Last Friday 11 November, the Pepa Espasa Art Exhibition is open to the public at Ca Lambert Exhibition Hall.

The exhibition was named “Un Cant a L’Esperança” —A song for hope— as a reflection of the empathetic links between women, the magic ability to interpret their silence and the need of expressing it. The exhibition is organised to remember and honour Nadia Anjuman, who was killed by her husband because of the publication of a poetry book, which was considered a crime. The exhibition includes alternative activities such as a poetry recital and a piano concert by Marta Espinos.

The exhibition will be open to the public until 9 January 2012 and is organised by the Equality Council of Jávea.

Tribute to the International Brigades

Tomorrow, Friday, 18 November, 2011 will be held in Jávea a tribute to the International Brigades that fought in the Spanish Civil War. This event will be organized by a group of residents of Javea from 19:30 h at the Casa de Cultura in Plaza de Baix and all interventions will be in English and Castilian Spanish.

Linda Palfreeman -British historian and writer based in the province of Alicante and professor at the University Cardenal Herrera de Elche- will open the  act with a lecture titled “Health: the British contribution to the medical Republican Spanish Civil War from 1936-1939″. This lecture is the same she imparted in the Memorial Trust Conference of the International Brigades which took place in March at the Imperial War Museum of London.

After Palfreeman ‘s speech Maggie Morgan and John Catanach –both residents in Xàbia- will contribute with their  memories about their relatives who fought in Spain with the International Brigades, an organization that gathered thousands of people from over 50 countries who traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic.

Jayan movie theatre in Jávea

Below we show you the information about Jávea’s Film Screenings in November 2011 offered by Sete Segell Film Club in theaters  Jayan of Javea. The sessions will take place on Sundays at 19:30 h. and Mondays at 20:00 h.

On Sunday 13 November and Monday 14 November, “No habrá paz para los Malvados” (“No Peace for the Wicked”) will be on in Cine Jayan. This Spanish film -directed by Enrique Urbizu and starring Jose Coronado- tells the story of a police inspector involved in a triple murder, and the only witness of the crime who managed to escape from the cop who wants to kill him.

On Sunday 20 November and Monday 21 November, the movie “Jodaeiye Nader az Simin” (“A separation”, as titled in English) deals with a new wave of free conception of Iranian cinema and an open critic to the role of the segregated women in the Persian society. This movie was banned in its own country because it was considered offensive for Iranian moral parameters.

Sunday 27 and Monday 28 November, the film “The tree of life” will tell the story of a American Midwest family in the fifties. This film follows the life journey of Jack, the eldest son,  from the innocence of childhood to the disappointment of his adult years in an attempt to reconcile the complicated relationship with his father. 2011 American film starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain.

Traditional Boats

The 9th annual Meeting of Traditional Boats will take place in the port of Jávea from Saturday 29 October, 2011, organized by the Associació de Barques tradicionals (Association of traditional boats) of the town. The meeting will begin on Saturday 29 and end on Monday 31 October (All Saints Day) and during these three days are scheduled activities like sailing, traditional fishing, screening of documentaries, traditional food and music performances, art exhibits and sailing workshops.

The Association of traditional boats of Jávea is composed by a group of people from different professions but with a common interest: the love of maritime heritage, vintage boats and the almost forgotten tradition of the sea related occupations.

During the year, this association carries out different projects to restore old boats, organize traditional boats meetings of in the port of Javea, restoration workshops, and exhibitions of crafts.

Vocapella Concert in Jávea

Vocapella is a choral group from Bielefeld (Germany’s largest city in the region of East Westphalia-Lippe) formed by about 40 singers who gather to rehearse and sing in Municipal Hospitals Bielefeld, Christmas fairs, private parties for members of the choir and also for international tours every two or three years.

This time the cities of Denia and Jávea were chosen for this group to perform as a part to the Spanish leg of their international tour 2011.

Vocapella will perform in Denia on 27 October at 20:30 h in the Social Centre Auditorium of  Denia and on Friday 28 October at 20:00 h in the Jávea’s Academy of Music (C / Rafael Echagüe # 5) .

Their repertoire includes madrigals (songs from the 1920’s films) under the direction of Annegret Rey.

In Vocapella performances we can enjoy well known pieces as “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from the The Wizard of Oz, “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca or “Hallelujah” from Shrek.

The Rotary Club Javea

On 24 October, Rotarians in Spain are launching a campaign to create awareness for the eradication of the polio virus. UNICEF and World Health Organization have now the support of Rotary International, the largest organization of entrepreneurs and professionals who provide humanitarian services around the world.

Celebrities from television, film, music, fashion or sports have joined this initiative. Locally, the Rotary club of Jávea has the support of the extreme athlete Ignacio Cardona, Ana Watt, sculptor Toni Marc  and avant-garde artist Teo San José.

Since 1985, the eradication of polio has been the main goal of Rotary worldwide . Rotarians around the world through The Rotary Foundation (based in USA) has contributed more than $ 800 million and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than two million children in 122 countries . The disease remains endemic in only four countries – Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan – although other countries remain at risk of imported cases.

Polio is a viral disease that can affect nerves and lead to partial or total paralysis.

Between 1840 and 1950, polio was a worldwide epidemic, but since the developed of polio vaccine, the incidence of this disease is greatly reduced. Polio -which has already been eradicated in many Western countries- is still present in several countries in Africa and Asia. Outbreaks still occur in developed countries, usually in groups of people who have not been vaccinated.

Next 24 October marks the World Day against Polio, a battle that needs a last effort to be won. Rotary Xàbia wants to take this opportunity to raise funds for this fight. Xàbia’s Rotarians, along with UNICEF, will gather next Sunday 23 October at noon by Rotary roundabout in  Pla road (front of the  Iceland supermarket), where there will be a gastronomic festival to raise funds for the cause.

Exhibition in Jávea

Today Monday 17 October at 20:00 hours, you can enjoy a film night at Jayan Theatre in Javea with the screening of the movie “Le code a changé” (Change of Plans), a  French film in original language with Spanish subtitles part of the film series “Sete Segell Film Club”

On Friday 21 October at the Casa de la Cultura de Jávea, Pia Tedesco will perform her musical show “Caberet” in the framework of the “Women, Music and Love” entertainment cycle. Time: 20:00 h.

On Saturday 22 October also at the Casa de la Cultura of Jávea, Edu Borja will perform his puppet show “Gerontoshow” at 17:00 and 18:30 h in the Valencian language cycle “Titelles in la nostra llengua” (puppets in our language). This show is aimed to children from 2 to 12 years old.

On Sunday 23 October there will be a new movie session of the “Sete Segell Film Club” in Javea’s Jayan theaters, with Argentinean movie “The Man Next Door”, directed by Mariano Cohn y Gastron Duprat.

Also from Saturday 15 October you can enjoy the paintings and sculpture exhibition of Antonio Santacreu and Alicia Ripoll at Al Marge Art Gallery and the fast painting display at the Casa Del Cable, open to the public until November 1.

Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012

The Race Village of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 will open at the port of Alicante on 14 October, the same day that will begin three busy weeks of activities in Alicante in the framework of the regattas and races of the Stage 1 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 that will connect Alicante to the South African port of Cape Town in a route of 6,500 nautical miles (12,038 kilometers) on 5 November 2011.

There are 40 different activities scheduled to fully open access,among  we can highlights the museum of the Volvo Ocean Race, which will have one permanent exhibition and a temporary one, where you can  observe the work in the control room of the race where the fleet is monitored 24 hours a day until the arrival to Galway (Ireland) next July 2012.

After enjoying all the events programmed in the framework of the regattas, the real kick off will be on 29 October with the In-Port Race or shore Regatta, a fast and tactic race that will take place at the spectacular Alicante’s waterfront. The winner of this event will be the first leader of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012.

On 30 October the Pro-Am Race will take place as an special event  with the presence of guests on board the ships, and later from 1 to 5 November, the Legends Regatta and Reunion will gather racing boats and crews who participated in the 38-year history of the race.

The last day of activities will be on 5 November with the starting of the Stage 1 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 with destination Cape Town port.

I Gymnastics Exhibition in Jávea

Today Sunday October 2, 2011 you have the opportunity to enjoy the I Jávea Gymnastics Exhibition and see the athletes competing at national level in rhythmic gymnastics. Fans can enjoy an exhibition in the Palau Miguel Buigues Andrés from 11 in the morning.

This event is organized by the Rhythmic Gymnastics Club of Xàbia. The show will begin at 10:00 h and will be a great opportunity to monitor progress of the gymnasts training after summer and before the pressure of national competitions.

As the club states, this is going to be a  good opportunity to see  athletes both from the club and coming from  the international competition circuit who are not easy to see competing, at least if you don’t travel to a big city. They are gymnasts as Natalia Cholbi, Sheila Doblado, Marta Villar or Lucia Caballer.

In addition to these athletes, infantile athletes such as Aitana Martínez, Clara Caballer, Laura Jaque, Vera García y Lucia Batalla, En alevines Lauren Douglas, Elena Mari, Maria Signes, Nera Chorro, Cristina Gallego and Lorena Bertomeu will be participating in this event.

Art exhibitions in Jávea

During the month of October we will have the opportunity to enjoy a good example of fine Art in Jávea with the exhibitions organized on Al Marge and Ca Lambert.

Al Marge exhibition hall (Virgen del Pilar St,  9. Historic Center of Javea): This place brings the work of two great Bosnian-Serbs artists Mirjana Lucic and Milivoje Unkovic.

MilijoveUnkovic , Doctor of Fine Arts, is a prestigious and renowned artist in the Balkan area.  Unkovic exhibits his works in Spain for the first time, presenting a series of paintings and engravings made during the last two years. His magnificent work parts from Central European influences enriched by an absolute mastery of drawing and using more varied techniques. His extensive work experience contributes to a strong, mature and unique artistic expression.

Mirjana Lucic,  who also has a PhD in Fine Arts,  presents a intense, developed and personal work in the solitude of her Andalusian studio, diving into her soul with no concessions to the outside and getting influences from new sources which are continuously updated.

In the Ca Lambert exhibition hall (Major St., 42), we will enjoy until the exhibition of the sculptor Remigio Vidal until 30 October. This sculptor shows his great modeling skill due to its more than 30 years experience in creating sculptures for different sectors. Now, through the creation of his own collection, the author brings his personal vision of the world of sensations, lighting changes and interrupted surfaces. The creative process of each of its limited and numbered series, includes design, modeling, casting, and subsequent hand polishing, making each piece unique. The exhibition opens on Friday 7 October  at 20:30 h.

Tapas tasting in Jávea

The 5^th Edition of “Tapeo” Tapas tasting in Jávea will take place in the historic old town of Jávea in the Plaça de la Constitució (market square) on the weekend of 1 and 2 October.

The idea of making a Tapas route was undertaken by the Association of Merchants and Businessmen of Xàbia Historic Center with the sponsorship of the Economy Council and Jávea Town for the fifth consecutive year of good work, superb dishes and the nicest service.

It is estimated that 12,000 people from all nationalities who lives in the region, enjoyed the “Tapeo” weekend last year amidst a great atmosphere, performances and of course the local cuisine.

This year the TAPEO 2011 schedule will be Saturday, 1 October 2011 from 11:00 to 16:00 h and 18:00 to close and Sunday 2 October, 2011 from 11:00 to 16:00 h. Besides tasting tapas, visitors can enjoy the following performances:

Tapas in Jávea

If you are going to be this weekend or during the next few days in Jávea, here’s a brief summary of events and activities scheduled for the coming days.

For basketball lovers, today and tomorrow -Sunday 25 September- you can enjoy the 1^st Trophy basketball “Joventut Xàbia” organized by the Basketball Club of Javea. The event will take place at the Migues Buigues sports hall from 10:00 h to 22:00 h.

On Sunday 25 September, everyone is invited to participate for a good cause in the VI Race for Life Xàbia, organized by the Cancer Association and sponsored by the Sports Council of Javea. The starting point of the race will be at Paris Avenue, opposite the L’Ancora Tennis Club at 11:00 h.

On Tuesday 27 September, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided route across the old town of Jávea, available in English language for convenience of the Anglophone residents or those who visit the city during these days. The route starts from the Tourist Info Centre at 19:00 h.

And finally, to whet your appetite, we inform you that the Commerce Association of Javea, is organizing for 1 and 2 October at the Plaza of the Constitution the “Tapas Tasting 2011” with the participation of  a rather large number of participating and some very tasty surprises.

Teulada-Moraira Auditorium

A couple of weeks ago we published the coming months’ schedule for events at the Teulada-Moraira auditorium. These events used to be performed only in big cities, but they are now available for all residents and visitors of the Costa Blanca North.

One of the top events of this new season will be on 26 December at 19:00 h by the Moscow Ballet performing “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, a fairy tale in two acts and three scenes. Admission: 25 €.

Trekking routes in Montgo

The “Meet the Montgo” program has scheduled three hiking trips for the last quarter of this year in order to promote the open air tourism and the flora and fauna appreciation at the Montgo Natural Park.

The trekking trips planned from October are the following:

The Plains of Cape San Antonio: This trip will take place on 30 October and will follow the route of the windmills, the cape viewpoints, the Flora reservoir and pine forests of the plains. This route is completely flat, making it very simple and suitable for all ages.

Difficulty: low

Duration: 2h 30’

La Cova del Camell: On 27 November everyone is invited to this activity through the path of the Colonies to the Cova del Camell (Camel cave), from which you can see spectacular views of the Montgo and Denia and enjoy the local flora.

Distance: 12 km

Difficulty: low

Duration: 4 hours.

Top of the Montgo: The last trekking trip of the year will take place on 18 December. This route follows the path to the top of Montgo from the Jávea side.

Distance: 6 km

Difficulty: high

Duration: 3h 30’

Oktoberfest in Valencia

The Oktoberfest is the most popular festival in Germany ,particularly in the city of Munich (Bavaria). The “Beer Festival” arrives for the third straight year at Valencia, and this time will be held in one of the most typical Spanish bullring, making a definitely  an interesting union of Spanish and German culture.

The Oktoberfest in Valencia will be held in the bullring until Saturday 17 September, from las12: 30 h to 01:30 h nonstop. To celebrate this great event, a 2000 m² tent has been installed in the bullring. There, all assistants will enjoy the best Bavarian beer, sample the typical south German cuisine as cabbage salads, sausages, pretzels and Bockwurst. This celebration will be accompanied by concerts, performances, live dj’s music, beer-drinking contests, raffles and gifts.

The first time ever that the Oktoberfest took place was in October 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig I to Princess Therese of Saxe-Altenburg and since then the festival has been held every year in the Bavarian city of Munich between late September and early October.

Every year, the Oktoberfest is celebrated in the Costa Blanca North in the town of Calpe with a party that brings many visitors from different parts of Spain and abroad. Theatrical guided tours in Jávea

During the month of September the theatrical routes will continue in Jávea as a very funny and interesting way of understanding the historic development of the town in the past few centuries.

These guided routes are offered in Castilian Spanish, English and German. Below you will find the date and time of each one of them:

“The Treasure of Xàbia” theatrical route:  10 September at 11:00 h in Castilian. This is a fun option to stroll through the historic center of Javea and to learn about the rich heritage through the guidance and acting of 3 actors portraying historical characters telling anecdotes of everyday life in the town in the yesteryears. The starting point of this 1 hour route will be the Tourist Info Center Xàbia. Registry in advance is required and the price is just 4 € for adults and € 2 for children. Historic Xábia guided tours:

•  13 and 27 September at 19:10 h: guided tour in English.
•  20 September at 19:00 h: guided tour in German.

Art exhibits in Javea

Art in Jávea can be seen in every corner of the old town, the port and, of course, in every exhibition hall of the town. Jávea is the town of the Costa Blanca which organizes the largest amount of art exhibitions. Among the most important local exhibitions during the month of September, we can find the ones below:

- Exhibition of Experimental School A. Vives of Gata town in the exhibition hall of the Casa del Cable in Jávea. The exhibition was inaugurated last 2 September and will be open until 25 September.

- “The Magic Mountain” Exhibition by Rubén Martínez Riera at Ca Lambert from Friday, 2 September at 20:00 h until September 30.

- “Xàbia Meravellosa” exhibition. Vicente Domenech is presenting from 1 to 30 September a selection of his best pictures in Area 1 exhibition hall, located on the Almirante Bastarreche square at Duanes del Mar.

- Colectiva’11 exhibit will open on Saturday 3 September at Set Espai d’Art Gallery. This exhibition allows all the artists in the gallery to show their most recent works in  formats as drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation and printmaking. Open until December 1.

- “Patrimoni Vegetal a Xàbia” (Xàbia plant heritage), exhibition at CIRN Foundation is a review of the native plant of Jávea and surrounding areas. This exhibition will remain open from Friday 9 September until 31 October.

- Natasha Marson exposes his “Espacio Cerrado” (Closed Area) from 9 September to 2 October at the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography Soler Blasco.

Xàbia Visual Week 2011

We have found out that the town hall of Jávea is announcing the Xàbia Visual Week under the motto “INSPIRAR”, a season of conferences about artistic creation taking place from 18 to 20 August.

We have been researching the web to bring additional information about the event and came across their website:  http://www.xabiavisualweek.com/, with comprehensive information on the event.

This initiative aims to socialize art and culture; bring the creative energy and works of the people of Jávea to the general public in the freest possible way.

From the moment of its conception, Xàbia Visual Week was created with the intention of becoming a participative and experimental meeting point around the visual arts and cultural creation including plastic arts, graphic design, photography, video, architecture, infography, interior design, fashion, music, theatre and dance.

This project gathers together the creative minds of Jávea to organize and produce the project, to debate and make decisions for its creation… in short, to make it possible. Each person or collective group can take part for €10. This event was a huge success in 2010 and it is expected to be the same in 2011.

Exhibitions this Summer in Jávea

This summer, the exhibitions in Jávea do not stop. Both residents and neighbours are therefore invited to enjoy this set of cultural alternatives.

Embark on an art appreciation tour to the galleries of Jávea and discover the beauty behind its streets.

Exhibition of Jávea’s Flora Heritage: This review of the autochthonic flora in Jávea and surrounding areas opens until 15 September. The exhibition takes place at Fundación Cirne (18 Alicante Avenue) Mondays through Fridays, 18:00 h to 21:00 h.

“La Mar de Bien” Exhibition opens until 15 August at Bento’s Galeria. This exhibition of paintings by Oscar Bento also introduces the visitor to the works of Manolo Navas Ribes, Javean artist who works sculptures in different types of stone.

“Jazz” Photo Exhibition: Many different visions of jazz along a walk through Xábia Histórica. The photos are exhibited on the windows of the 24 shops.

Costa Tur, Teos and Pity Exhibition at Avima, open until 30 August.

Collective Jazz-Themed Exhibition: Sculpture, paintings, drawings and photos at Ca Lambert —41 Mayor St.— available to visit from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 h to 13:00 h and from 17:00 h to 20:00 h.

“Vicente Colom, Javier Chapa y Horacio Silva” Exhibition at Al Marge until 17 August.

“Retrospectiva Carteles Jazz” Exhibition visually reviews the XI previous editions of the Xábia Jazz International Festival at the Soler Blasco Museum —Primicies St. It opens Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:00 h to 13:00 h and from 17:00 h to 20:00 h. On Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, it opens from 10:00 h to 13:00 h. Mondays closed.

Manolo Ayonarte Exhibition: This painter and architect originally from Madrid will showcase its work at El Marge art gallery until 2 September. Opening times: Mondays to Saturdays, from 11:00 h to 13:00 h and from 19:00 h to 21:00 h. You can attend on Sunday, with previous appointment.

Xàbia Clasica Festival 2011

Classical music aficionados will enjoy 4 fantastic concerts Xàbia from August 10 to 14 with the II Xàbia Clasica Festival.

After the popularity of this festival last year, classical music comes to Jávea once again with renowed acts like that of the Quartet of Bucharest, Il Concerto Accademico, Gabriel Bianco and Boris Andrianov.

The concerts will take place at Plaza del Conservatorio (conservatory square) at 22.00 h.

Tickets will be available the day of the concert at the box office and at the Tourist Offices of Jávea. The price per show is €20, €16 for senior citizens and €10 for students.

August 10: Bucharest Quartet, from the “Lubomir Pipkov” Schoolin Sofia.

The repertoire will include major compositions for quartet of  baroque, romantic and impressionistic authors with some elements of contemporary music.

The set is made up of 14 string players, and the collaboration of wind instruments and percussion. The repertoire includes masterpieces of string orchestra and those most representative of Spanish music.

August 13: Gabriel Blanco. Classical guitar.

22 years old Gabriel Bianco has established himself as a solid impulse in the musical scene. Recently he won the first prize in an International Music Competition held in Madrid. His gear includes Savarez Strings and Karura guitars.

August 14: Boris Andrianov, cello.

One of the most famous Russian musicians of his generation, since 2005 he plays a Montagnana cello from the Russian State Collection. He will perform the Suite 1 of J.S. Bach, Russian Fragments of R. Shchedrin, Lamentatio of G. Soliman and Sonata from Z. Kodaly.

“The Treasure of Jávea” Theatrical Guided Route through Jávea’s historic city centre:

Starting point: Tourist Info Centre Javea, the route takes approximately 1 hour and a half and interested people must first register in one of the tourist offices in the town as places are limited. The price is € 4 for adults, € 2 for children and free of charge for kids under 8 years.

During every Tuesday of the ongoing month of August in Jávea,  we all can enjoy free movies on the beach of Arenal at 22:00 hours in the framework of the film cycle “Cine Vora la Mar” organized by the Youth Department of Javea.

Among the films featuring in this series, we can find the following titles for the amusement of all members of the family:

Tuesday August 2: “Tangled”.

Animated film by Disney studios based in the Grimm Brothers tale of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider about the incredible adventures full of fun and spooky stories.

Tuesday August 9: “Tron Legacy”.

Another feature film from the Disney factory. This futuristic secuel of the 80’s classic is a high-tech adventure that takes place in a digital world unlike anything ever seen on screen.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski.

Tuesday August 16: “Grown Ups”.

Comedy film starring Adam Sandler.

Adam Sandler meets with old pals from childhood to spend a hilarious weekend off together.

Tuesday August 23: “Clash of the Titans”.

A story based on the myth of Perseus and his struggle to save the city of Argos. Directed by Louis Leterrier. Cast: Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and Mads Mikkelsen.

Tuesday August 30: “Primos”.

Spanish summer comedy by Daniel Sanchez Arevalo.

During a summer holidays, three cousins ​​travel to come to Comillas, the resort town where they spent their childhood vacations, to look for the first girl one of them slept with.

The films will be projected on a screen of nine by five meters installed in the sand on the beach, by the central parking area. Admission is free. Bring your chair or beach towel to lay in the sand.

The Rock of Ifach in Calpe

It has been some time since the town hall of Calpe and the “Sense Limits” association started organizing the first official open waters swimming competition around the Rock of Ifach, an icon of Calpe and the rest of Costa Blanca north.
The “I Volta al Penyal d’Ifac”, which is the name of the competition, will take place on 4th September. It is the first event of its kind in Calpe and we hope to witness more editions in the future.

This event adds up to other sports competitions in the region, such as the XV Jávea Beach Volleyball Open at Arenal Beach, Jávea.

Even though admissions to enter this competition are open until 31st August, we strongly advise you to sign up as soon as you can if you really want to take part. There is space for only 300 athletes and the organization has declared that people has shown a lot of interest in this competition.

Xàbia Jazz 2011

Kiko Berenguer is a well-esteemed man in Jávea and a known musician in the Jazz scene. Thanks to this talented man and with the cooperation of public and private institutions in Jávea, the Xàbia Jazz 2011 International Festival is a reality. And the most editions, the better it gets.

To warm up, Ca Lambert is hosting an exhibition of previous Xàbia Jazz Festivals, with photos and items to take us in a retrospective of this event, which is now internationally known.

The concerts will all take place from 4 to 7 August at Constitución Square, at 22:30 h.

Tickets are available at Servicam. Alternatively, you can check other sale point with the Tourist Info Offices scattered in Jávea.

Admission fees are € 15 per day (€ 12 reduced fee) and €40 for the 4 days (€30 reduced fee).

Summaland Xàbia 2011

Approximately one month ago, we published information in this blog about the organization of the Summaland Festival 2011 in Jávea.

It is not the first edition of the Summaland festival, and every one of the previous editions were famous for bringing to Spain some of the most relevant figures of the electronic and dance music scene.

Right now, the team of organizers is working nonstop to make of this event an unforgettable dance party this weekend. In the meanwhile, we found out more details about this festival:

It will be held on the plot that now serves as a parking lot for Arenal beach. It will not take place in Arenal Beach exactly but a couple of blocks away, on the corner of Tamarit Avenue and Salobres Street.

The lineup will include Juan Magan, Barcelona’s Javi Mula, Ministry of Sound DJs and We Love Asere, an electronic music collective including musicians such as Victor Magan, Josepo, Rivero, Maurizio Gubellini , Takeshi Kurosawa, Salgado, David Campoy, P Dumore and Jo C.

Port of Jávea

Besides being an established and popular destination for the practice of extreme sports, Jávea is also popular among those who enjoy hiking and classic mountain-related activities, due to the many paths available.

Next week, for example, there will be two guided hiking tours on two different established paths. This is the information of these tours:

Thursday, 28 July: Ermita Santa Lucía hiking tour. This path is also called SL-CV-99.

Difficulty: Low.

Lenght: 1:30 h.

Starting point: Constitución Square.

Starting time: 19:00 h.

Sunday, 31 July: Route Jávea harbour – Cap Sant Anotni – Picnic area – Santuari – Molins – Jávea harbour. This route is officially known among hikers as PR-CV-355.

Difficulty: Low.

Lenght: 3 hours.

Starting point: Parking lot of the Jávea harbour fish market.

Starting time: 09:00 h.

To take part, all you have to do is put some sunscreen on, take some liquid to hydrate on the way and show up on time at the mentioned meeting points. Just say you would like to join and that is it.

Historical Tours of Javea

Thinking of those who visit us from other countries, the Jávea Tourism Council organized a series of historic city centre tours in different languages back in April.

The languages of the guided walks will be English, French and German.

Jávea Music Conservatory

The Town Hall of Jávea, aware of the importance of cultural events and activities for residents and tourists alike, organizes for another year the music event called “Música a L’Estiu”. This is the 26th edition.

This series of concerts bring some of the best musicians in the international chamber music scene to both instruct on techniques and how to manage the instruments , as well as to play concerts and make Javeans enjoy with their music.

Cala Granadella

The Granadella-Castell PR-CV-354 route is one of the most popular ones among local experienced hikers. It is of medium difficulty and it takes approximately 3 hours to complete.

This route starts at the parking lot of Cala Granadella in Jávea. It will go across the called “variante Teulería”, which is nothing but a shortcut. If we did the complete route, it will take more than 4 hours to complete.

Hikers will be able to pass the ruins of the Granadella Tower (Castell de la Granadella) and enjoy the nice views from the cliffs and the beautiful flora and fauna along the way.

We recommend you to bring your camera to take home some of the beautiful sights from the highest spots of the path.

To join the adventure of hiking this path, please show up on 24th July at 09:00 h at the Cala Granadella parking lot, by the restaurant.

You do not need to sign up anywhere and the guide is free, but make sure you show up on time.

XIV International Jazz Festival of Alicante

Once again, Alicante province leads the international music scene in the region with festivals such as the Low Cost Benidorm 2011. This time, it is the XIV International Jazz Festival of Alicante. The Provincial Council of Alicante and CAM bank are the organizers of this event gathering some of the most relevant jazz artists worldwide for 5 days, at Tossal de Manises (Zeus St. Phone number +34 965 26 24 34). Some of the key figures of contemporary jazz taking part in this event are:

The Blind boys of Alabama, awarded 5 Grammys, and Chucho Valdés, the Cuban musician who decided to return to Costa Blanca after 4 years of absence.

Views from the Montgó

Next Saturday, 16^th July, there will be a different activity for those who enjoy hiking. There will be a hiking tour to the Montgó nature park, but it will not be the traditional route. This one will have a twist. This outdoors activity will take place at night; the good thing of this is the fresher air during the night in contrast with the heat during this summer season. Also, there is an added difficulty to this activity: Participants will need a lot more of attention, sense of orientation and being more mountain-wise.

Because of the complexity of this activity, only those with the proper mental and physical conditions to face this challenge will be able to take part in it.

The hike starts at 22:00 h. Hikers will meet at the parking of Jávea’s shooting range. From there, people will be taken to the starting point on a bus.

The activity is expected to last 7 hours, which means people will be arriving back with the sunrise.

To join the hiking group, please sign up firs at the Tourist info offices of Jávea. Be quick, because the capacity is limited. The fee to enter the group is €5 and the organizers recommend you to bring water, food, proper shoes, photo camera, something for the cold weather and a torch.

Low Cost Festival 2011

Finally, we can confirm the definitive lineup of artists taking part in the Low Cost Benidorm Festival 2011. For 3 days and its nights, national and international artists will meet in Benidorm, the party capital of the Spanish Costa Blanca.

This is a really good lineup for anyone who likes alternative Spanish music and international indie bands.

Valencia's bullring

This year, the Feria de Julio 2011 arrives in Valencia and with it, the bullfighting events.

The most popular matadors in the national and international bullfighting scene will show their bullfighting abilities on the Valencia bullring.

The tickets and multiple-day tickets are already on sale and word has it there will be more ticket sales than on Fallas 2011.

From Saturday 16^th to Sunday 24^th July, a comprehensive schedule of bull-related events will take place, for the enjoyment of people who like bulls.

The bullfights with young bulls and picadors will be held during the first days of the fiesta, from 16^th to 19^th July. From the 20^th, the bullfights with adult bulls will be held, with some of the most popular matadors:

-         Wednesday 20^th July: Bullfighting with Tomás Sánchez,  José Calvo y Alberto Aguilar.

-         Thursday, 21^st July: Vicente Barrera will perform his last bullfighting show in Valencia. El Cid and Daniel Luque will bullfight Juan Pedro Domecq’s bulls in the afternoon.

-         Friday, 22tnd July: Enrique Ponce, El Julio and José María Manzanares, three of the most cherished matadors, star this afternoon.

-         On Saturday 23^rd July there will also be a much awaited show by José Tomás and the experienced Juan Mora and Arturo Saldivar.

-         Sunday 24^th July: It is the last bullfighting day in Valencia, closing with horseback bullfighting by Andy Cartagena, Leonardo Hernández and Manuel Manzanares against 6 bulls of the San Mateo and San Pelayo cattle ranchs.

Campus Party Valencia 2011

The Campus Party Valencia started as a small LAN Party in Andalusia. It has been more than twenty years since this party happened and its popularity increased to the extent of becoming a massive event for the first time back in 2000 in Valencia.

We are in 2011 now, and we have been witnesses of the growth of this party, from a “geeks only gathering” to a much awaited massive event not only in Valencia, but also in other big cities in other continents  worldwide.

But the Campus party in Valencia will always be special: It was the first big one, and of course, the most popular one.

I National Dog Exhibition in Ondara

The Portal de la Marina Shopping Centre, only 17 km from Jávea and 24 km from Cumbre del Sol, is getting ready to welcome everybody to the I National Dog Exhibition in Ondara, to take place next3rd July.

If you wish to attend the event as part of the public, all you have to do is show up on the date of the event.

This exhibition counts for the Spain’s national championship and the regional in the Region of Valencia.

There will be monographic exhibitions on York Terriers and French bulldogs. Also, there will be a session of dog breed recognition and a popular contest of crossbred dogs.

San Juan Bonfires 2011 in Jávea

If you are planning to spend this weekend in Jávea/Xàbia and expect to have a busy time in this nice coastal town, you must be happy to know that there is a comprehensive calendar of cultural and sports events for al tastes.

The Hogueras de San Juan 2011 —San Juan Bonfires— take centre stage during the next few days, with bullfighting, fire bulls, street parties at the bull ring, a concert by Unión Musical de Catarroja and Centre Artístico Musical de Xàbia at Reina Sofía de Thiviers park, a show by the Montecarlo Orchestra on Saturday 18, etc.

You can also consider joining the XVI International Festival on Augusta Avenue, as well as going to the concerts organised for this festival, on parallel dates. Music, fun, food, all this in an event taking place from 16 to 18 June.

If you are more the sporty type, you would rather choose the XXXVI Region of Valencia’s Junior Tennis Championship, Coca Cola Trophy, to be held at the Jávea Tennis Club. These days, the final matches will take place from 10:00 h.

Culture vultures would prefer the exhibitions held at the many halls and museums of Jávea. This weekend, there will be exhibitions by the artists José Antonio Crisóstomo, Emilio Zaldívar, Eusebio López, Marcelo Delgado, Marian Navarro, etc.

Also, if you like music, come and enjoy the Concerts at the Music Conservatory; on Friday from 17:00 h to 19:00 h there will be an audition to enter the Professional Choir of the Jávea Conservatory. On Sunday 19 at 12:00 h, the Preludio Choir hosted by Roquetes and the Choral Society will entertain us.

As everyone living in or visiting the town of Javea knows, the cultural scene in this town is restless, especially when it comes to arts, due to the large number of exhibition halls available that let you enjoy the work and relevant artists of all tendencies and techniques. Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe in Valencia

The city of Valencia has always been at the forefront of cultural expressions and entertainment in the Spanish Mediterranean area. Among the wide range of sports events available in Valencia, the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe (to be held from 24 to 26 June) is one of the most important ones.

For the fourth consecutive year this event will be held in the capital of the Valencia Region, in the superb urban layout which is one of the most interesting, exciting and aesthetically best designed circuit by integrating the contemporary architecture of Santiago Calatrava, the old town district of Nazareth, the modern port of Valencia and the blue Mediterranean Sea in a single track.

A new feature this year will be the “Pit Walk”, which give the attending people the opportunity to visit the Pit Lane area to view up close the Formula 1 drivers and team during the tuning of the cars, and even get autographs from the pilots.

To get Pit Walk tickets you  must be holder of a 3-day pass ( trainings, pole position and race) and approach the official stand of the Valencia Street Circuit (located in the leisure area of ​​Beach Park) on Wednesday June 22 (from 12 to 22 hours) and Thursday 23 (from 12 to 15 hours). Capacity limited to 2,000 people.

Summer Courses at Lady Elizabeth School

Specially designed for 4 to 11 years old children, Summer Games is a course which will be carried out from 4 to 29 July in morning time from 9:30 to 12:30.

The main goal of this course is to teach English playing fun games, with crafts, music and swimming activities in the indoor sports facilities located at the Lady Elizabeth Junior School Cumbre del Sol in Poble Nou de Benitachell.

There are several options to participate in these courses; you can enroll your kids in daily or weekly basis or for the entire length of the course. The other educational activity designed by the Lady Elizabeth School is the Language improvement courses “England at Home”, a unique language program for speaking English in daily activities with no need to travel abroad.

La Albufera Nature Park in Valencia is one of the most interesting natural areas in the Region of Valencia, not to mention nationally and internationally. This park constitutes a clear example of how nature and man can coexist in a sustainable way to allow the development of flora and fauna of inestimable value.

L’Albufera in Valencia constitutes the largest lake in the Iberian Peninsula, with 2,800 hectares. This lake is approximately 15 km south to Valencia city and 70 km south to Jávea in a old maritime gulf enclosed by a strip of land and fed by the waters of gullies and irrigation ditches.

This is the 25^th year —a quarter of a century— since L’Albufera was declared an official nature park, but that was just the start of the acknowledgement of how valuable this place is, as later, in 1990, the Special Plan of Protection was approved and just recently, on 16th May, a second measure was taken: the Plan to Regulate the Water Resources in the Hydrographical Basin of L’Albufera.

These plans were redefined in the new Guiding Plan of Use and Management of L’Albufera, enforced since 2004.

Xavi Castillo

The calendar of events in Jávea continues to fill up with all kind of shows: Art exhibitions, music, didactic activities, presentations and now, humour.

Today, we would like to talk about an event that will move us out of the routine and will offer a fresh and funny point of view about the real everyday life in Spain.

Xavi Castillo really masters this art.

This stand-up comedian and theatre actor natural from Alcoy, another town in Costa Blanca north, is very popular al across the Region of Valencia —not only for its talent at the moment of jumping onto the stage to play any character with its theatre comany called Pot de Plom, but also because of the good laughs people have with him on his stand-up comedy shows.

Xavi usually makes stand-up in Valencian language, and it could be the case also on this show. Last year, Xavi presented a caustic show called “And so we’ve bumped into the church” (L’heretge de Xàtiva i altres històries in Valencian). This comedy annoyed some conservatives who tried to censor him, but laughs were more and louder.

Xavi likes to deal with everyday themes on a critic but funny way, and people usually leave the show in a fantastic mood but with their heads filled with things to reflect on. Religion is not the only issue Xavi likes to play with. Other sensitive issues like politics cannot escape the tongue of this comedian either.

After presenting his show “Això ho pague jo”  –this one’s on me, Xavi Castillo returns to this region; more specifically, to the back of the Sports Centre —Palau d’Esports Miguel Buigues Andrés — on duanes del Mar, Port area.

The event will take place on 5^th June at 22:00 h. It will be an special feature.

Diving Party at L’Ampolla Beach in Moraira

It is not the first time Teulada-Moraira celebrates the diving party.

After the success of the last edition, Teulada-Moraira has decided to organise a new diving party that will take place this weekend of May 2011 in two different but equally nice locations in town: Playa L’Ampolla beach and Real Club Náutico de Moraira —Moraira Royal Yacht Club.

The chosen dates are just perfect. It is springtime in Costa Blanca and the weather forecast is favourable: warm enough to jump in the sea; sunny and nice at the same time.

Town Hall, Church Square in Javea

Anglo speaking visitors or residents in Jávea will now have the fantastic opportunity to know about the history of this city in more detail, thanks to the initiative of the Town Hall and the Tourist Info Offices.

This guided tour, told in English, will take place next Tuesday, 24 May 2011. The excursion will start at 19:00 h. The most relevant and historically significant interest points of Jávea will be visited. Those who wish to take part in this excursion will be able to discover the stories beneath beautiful edifications such as the Church, the Town Hall and Casa del Cable, among other places.

To participate, you have to sign up, as capacity is limited.

Xàbia Folk 2011 Music Fest

Xàbia Folk celebrates its 10th anniversary in May 2011 and dedicates it to Pep Bas, nicknamed “Coeta”, who has done so much for this music festival.

As a special feature of this 10^th edition, the Ethnographic Soler Blasco museum holds a commemorative exhibition that adds up to the concerts below:

Friday, 13th May: Tendachënt, a band from the Italian Piamonte region, presents Arnèis, a concert with acoustic sounds that distances from previous works with a more rocky sound.

Valencia Global Champions Tour

The Global Champions Tour is one of the most prestigious horse racing competitions at international level and from6 to 8 May, this renowned event will take place in the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia.

This second stage of the Global Champions Tour tournament is held in cities known for their glamorous lifestyle as Monte Carlo, Abu Dhabi, Cannes and Valencia, where elite horsemen and women will gather to compete in this test.

After the success in the first two years of holding this event in Valencia, Oxer Sport -leader in organizing equestrian events in Spain- will produce the event for the third time with the collaboration of the G Valencia Region Government and the City council.

The contest will take place around the Principe Felipe Science Museum which, like last year, will provide the lake to be converted into a jumping horse’s arena for the 3 days of this event.

Along with this event, Valencia adds another highly competitive sport on his back with events like the America’s Cup of sailing, the European Grand Prix Formula 1 and a Master Series tennis tournament.

Forever Young, by Tricicle

Tricicle, the Catalonian trio of comedians, will present a musical comedy at the Olympia Theatre of Valencia.

This play tells the story of a group of retired artists who do not accept they have gotten old. Forever Young is a nice, fun show made with good taste and entertaining musical acts.

This play is an ode to the unquenchable spirit of those who make a living out of art and acting.

The idea of bringing this Erik Gedeon’s play to Spain started in Oslo last year, when members of Tricicle assisted to a representation to this play in its Norwegian version and liked it so much that they bought the rights to represent it Spain in 2011.

Forever Young was premiered with great success at Madrid – where it was running for about six weeks – and it will be staged in Valencia from 27^th April to 8^th May, looking to repeat the success of Spanish capital.

Theatrical routes of Javea

In an effort to boost tourism while promoting  local history and culture, the tourism council of the municipality of Jávea will offer guided walking tours around the historic city centre, with artists representings historical town dwellers.

The characters will guide the tour while playing a part adhered to a script, but at the same time actively interacting with the public. This script will combine historical accuracy with humour and a didactic style.

Three actors are responsible for bringing to life historical figures. People like Sant Vicent Ferrer, the architect Domingo Urteaga or Antoni Banyuls will have a special participation over the visits by the renewed streets of the historic city centre of Jávea.

Tour price: €4 adults, €2 for children over 8 years, and free for children under 8 years.

Poster for the 10th edition of Xàbia Folk festival

From 29^th April to 15^th May, the Soler Blasco Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum of Jávea —Museu Arqueològic i Etnogràfic Municipal Soler Blasco— will host a very special photography exhibition that adds up to the activities and cultural events on during this season in Jávea. Xàbia Folk’s 10th Anniversary Exhibition.

It is ten years now since this festival became a regular appointment every year. It has always been brought by regional associations and institutions such as the Town Hall of Xàbia, Cultura Xàbia, the Education Council of the Region of Valencia Government and Xàbia Folk, just to mention some.

Last year’s edition was a huge success, and while we await the 10^th one with excitement, the museum opens its doors to host an exhibition with photographs and posters that tell the story of the festival.

We are sure this showcase will bring sweet memories to those who attended previous Xàbia Folk festivals, and will spark your interest into upcoming editions if you have never gone to one before.

Al Marge Espai D’Art

Al Marge Espai D’Art is an innovative art space that is on the way of becoming a cultural reference not only in Jávea but in the region, thanks to the original artistic activities and showcases it usually holds.

This is the meeting point for both the most classical approaches to art and the most breakthrough artistic tendencies and expressions. Al Marge Espai D’Art’s goal is to feed the artistic sensitivity of the residents in the region of Marina Alta and to promote artists who showcase their work in this place.

From 23^rd April to 13^th May, 12 artists will be presenting their pieces of art on the “De Dos en Dos” art exhibition. The name, which is Spanish from “In twos” , called this way because artists will make pairs to blend the best of their styles.

The couples of artists joining this initiative are:

Medieval Market in Calpe

The Town Hall of Calpe is organising —as it does every year— the traditional Medieval Street Market and Fair from 22^nd to 24^th April.

This event is a small part of the comprehensive calendar of events planned for the Holy Week and Easter season in Calpe.

The Town Hall stated in a press release that the intention of the Medieval Fairs is to leave a testimony of the past and present of the art of handcrafts and traditional products, as well as to educate about how these are made, and the raw materials used for this.

Likewise, the fair looks to bring back some customs and to promote handcrafts sales as well as self-employment.

Besides the fantastic food stalls and the handcrafts on sale, this street market will feature many activities for people of all ages, such as:

• Handcraft workshop exhibitions
• Children’s playground
• Geese walks
• Traditional farm tools showcase
• Carrousel

The medieval fair will be set on the historic city centre of Calpe and there will also be performances, including battles with medieval weapons and music with medieval instruments.

Nearby towns like Jávea are organising similar events, such as the Easter Fair.

Empordá Chamber Orchestra

Next Good Friday, 22^nd of April at 22:00 h, everybody is welcome to enjoy one of the many cultural activities organised by the Town Hall of Jávea for this Holy Week: a classical music concert by OCE, the Empordà Chamber Orchestra.

Since its foundation in Figueres in 1989, this Catalonian chamber orchestra has launched 14 albums with interpretations of masterpieces of classical music. They have also collaborated on productions with RNE (Spain’s National Radio), Catalunya Radio, Catalunya Música and TV3.

The concert will take place in the Church of San Bartolomé. The orchestra will be playing works from masters of classical music such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Xavier Montsalvatge, Charles Gounnod, Giacomo Puccini, Valentín Miserachs, Carles Coll, Artur Lácer, Jaume Cristau, Enric Morera and Franz Schubert.

There is a suggested admission fee of €10 that will be destined to preservation and maintenance works for the church.

XXVIII Popular Handcrafts Fair of Jávea

The XXVIII Popular Handcrafts Fair of Jávea —Feria de Artesanía Popular de Jávea— will take place from 21st to 25th April, coinciding with Easter.

The event will feature performances, workshops for kids, leisurely activities and music, besides handcrafted products typical of this region.

This fair will take place in the historic city centre of Jávea, more specifically in Plaza Baix Square —Major Street and Placeta del Convent.

It is being organised by the Association of Traders of the Historic City Centre of Xàbia —Asociación de Comerciantes del Casco Histórico de Jávea, the Trade Council of the Town Hall, The Agency for Promotion of Commercial Initiatives  and the Javean Councils of Tourism, Culture and Fiestas.

Events like these aim to preserve and promote the regional typical products that are threatened by the modern life and customs that leave aside traditions to focus in state-of-the-art, mass produced items.

The fair will open officially from 11:00 h to 22:00 h at night, but it can remain open until later if things move up and the organisers of the event consider it relevant.

Cultural activities and events in Jávea are varied and innovative, thanks to the initiatives of plastic artists and art collectives that continuously showcase their works in galleries and exhibition halls all around Jávea.

Concert by Néstor Mont: This talented musician and representative of the Region of Valencia culture will introduce his album “Amor de Tierra”.

This artist from Almagessí is a veteran in the music business. He started his career as a musician in 1993 and has been a member of the regional group called “Cendraires”, even though his work is mainly solo.

He has recorded 3 albums so far. His latest work is “Amor de Tierra”, released in 2010.

Jávea Market

Xàbia Histórica is an association grouping together owners of shops in the historic city centre of Jávea.

This association is made up of over 100 associates who work together to promote business and cheer the city.

Their official name is Asociación de Comerciantes y empresarios del Centro Histórico de Xàbia —Association of businesspeople and traders on the historic city centre of Xàbia.

Xàbia Histórica is always stirring things up in the old city centre with activities such as Tapas on the streets, handcrafts fairs, Christmas street markets, Halloween parties, Christmas parties for kids, etc.

This time they bring the ”Xàbia histórica i comerç al carrer” outlet trade fair from 15^th to 17^th April, both days included.

The shops taking part in this event will exhibit their products either at Jávea’s market or at Jaume I Avenue, depending on in which part of the city the shop is.

This trade fair will open every day at 10:00 h.

PR-CV355 Hiking Trail

Hiking trails on the coast of Alicante enjoy an international reputation for its contrasting semi-desert landscape with mountains and beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.

One of the routes that have the greatest appeal among professional and amateur hikers is called PR-CV355 route, known as the path from Cova Tallada to the Santuario through the mills.

This route covers about 15 km of flat trails and steep slopes in about 5 hours at a moderate pace.

On Sunday 17 April, the city of Jávea will host a guided walk through this route that starts from the Sanctuary of Maria de Deu dels Angels at 9: 00 h.

Unlike other less demanding routes, this activity is a high difficulty and long distance one, so attending is not recommended for hikers who are not fit to complete the course.

All participants should bring water, food, technical footwear, flashlight and sunscreen.

Javea Town Hall in the old part of town

From mid-April, the Department of Tourism of Jávea will organize a series of guided tours to the historic old town of this popular Mediterranean coast town.

As it has been done in previous years, the Jávea Town Department of Tourism is on charge of offering varied programming activities and to publicize the cultural and natural heritage of the area. These guided tours will be offered in English, French and German.

The visit is expected to have duration of 1 hour and a half and it is scheduled to depart from Jávea Tourist Centre office on Tuesdays at 19:00 h.

Those interested should register in any of the three tourist offices in Jávea.

The established contribution is €2 for adults and €1 for children from 8 years on. Groups are limited to 25 people, so it is advisable to book in advance. For more information, call +34 965 794 356.

The first date of the Old Town tours is schedule for 19^th April.

"Menejador" dug cellar

Carrascar de la Font Roja is a beautiful nature park located in Ibi and Alcoy, on the Sierra del Menejador mountain, in province of Alicante, Costa Blanca north.

This nice mountain features a great variety of well-preserved Mediterranean flora and fauna. Besides, if you like ethnology, you will surely enjoy this hike: In the XVIII century, this mountain played a key role in the economy of the region, as cellars were dug to store the snow that was later traded.

Besides these cellars, there are unique historic buildings hard to find anywhere else: these are masos, masías or country houses.

Free interpersonal skills workshops

Starting this April, the City of Jávea will hold workshops in order to improve personal and social skills of the participants.

The Municipal Counseling Centre of Xàbia (represented by local psychologists Marina Pardo and Carmina Izquierdo) is the office on charge of providing guidance to all those who are unemployed or have spare time and want to learn strategies to improve personal and social skills, and its useful application in everyday life.

These sessions will be held on Tuesdays 5, 12 and 19 April at the Social Centre, and aims to form working groups to address issues such as pressure management, positive thinking and social skills towards planning and organization.

These workshops are a public service within the scope of programs offered by the city for bringing help to those having personal crisis and communication difficulties.

L'Ampolla beach at Moraira

The weekend of 9^th and 10^th April, Moraira’s L’Ampolla beach will host the “Fiesta del Mar” —Sea party. This sporting event is aimed at the practice and dissemination of water sports with great emphasis on rowing sports.

In this event, all attendees can practice for free sports activities Kayak-related (very popular in the area), Stand Up Paddle (row standing) and even sailing.

Among the activities planned within the framework of this event there are included:

9^th April:
10:00 h: Opening of the festival and “maiden sailing” on a school boat
10:30 h to 12:00 h: Introduction Course to Stand Up Paddle Surf (SUP), family Kayak and Fishing Kayak.

FiraCalp'11 trade fair

The town of Calpe has recently made ​​the announcement to traders, shop owners and all the citizens about the organization of the third edition of FiraCalp (Calp trade fair). This commercial and touristic event is organized by the town of Calpe to promote the local economy, tourism and hospitality industry in this town located near Jávea.

To each participants of the fair, Calpe City Council will make available a 3 x 2 meters stand, a large counter and cleaning and security service (day and night) for the duration of the event. The venue of this event will be, as in previous editions the Plaza Mayor (Main Square).

To participate in FiraCalp’11, all businesses have to be current on all municipal payments and taxes and must hold a trade license, or have already begun the application process for getting that.

The participation fee for merchants is 150 Euros for restaurants and bars and 100 Euros for other shops.

FiraCalp’11 will be held on Thursday, 5^th May from 19:00 h to 02:00 h and Friday 6th, Saturday 7th and Sunday May 8 from 11:00 h in the morning.

Ars Nova Polyphony Group

We have good news for festival-goers and polyphony lovers in Jávea and neighbouring towns. Next 26^th March at 20:00 h, Convento de las Agustinas —Augustines Convent, located in Placeta del Convento Square— is happy to hold a concert by Ars Nova Polyphony Group, which will be part of the IX Festival de Polifonía —Polyphony festival.

The festival will welcome two additional chorals, still to confirm.

Grupo Polifónico Ars Nova —Polyphony Group— was created in 1993 in Jávea by 20 music artists from Jávea, Gata de Gorgos, Ondara and Jesús Pobre. This choral is well known in Costa Blanca and, if you like this music style, we are sure you will appreciate their talent.

Ars Nova will be holding concerts around the Region of Valencia the year throughout.

Jávea Public Library

The city of Jávea, in collaboration with talented local and foreign artists, is always updating the cultural offer for all the citizens. The first half of March was full of alternatives and the month ends with a very attractive exhibition of drawings, watercolors pints and magazines as we can see below:

Exhibition of watercolors paints and drawings by Andrew Lambert. After several solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland and Portugal, Lambert exhibits his most cutting edge work in Jávea.

"Animal Kingdom" at Jayan Theatre

This month in Jávea, a set of foreign movies will be screened. Some of them are part of the film seasons organised by Setè Segell Film Club, which presents its choices at Jayán Film Theatre in Jávea.

Conference “Chemical Origin of life: what Darwin would like to know”: Conference dealing with everything Charles Darwin did not say in his books about the emergence and evolution of life on Earth and how, by placing their studies in a current context, we would arrive at certain conclusions by social taboos of the era.

Cova Tallada

The Region of Valencia Parks and Recreation Council, in cooperation with the city of Jávea, will organize a series of outdoors activities open to all citizens of the town of Jávea and surrounding areas.

Next Sunday 20^th March there will be a guided hiking tour departing and arriving from the Port of Jávea. This hike will follow the trail known as the PR-CV 355 route.

This route will take approximately 3 hours to be completed and will go through places like Cape San Antonio, the Sanctuary and Los Molinos.

The journey, despite being of low difficulty, requires good mental preparation to keep pace of the 3 hours hike. It is advisable to carry enough water for the entire journey, proper footwear and a camera to capture the beautiful landscape.

The scheduled departure time for this activity will be at 9:00 h and participants are invited to meet at the parking area of the fish market of Jávea port.

Conferences at Casa de Cultura

The Women’s Day will be held next 8 March. As a part of the celebration for this day, Jávea’s Equity Council has organized a series of events to claim respect and equal treatment for women.

For this, on Friday 4 March the exhibition Women to Remember at Home was carried out in Casa Tena.

On Sunday 6 March at 11:00 h. the Race for the Women will take place in Javea’s athletics track. This event will be carried out thanks to cooperation between the Equity Council and the Llebeig – Xàbia Athletic club.

On Tuesday 8 March at 17:30 h, Jávea’s Casa de Cultura will host the conference “Judicial response to gender violence”, lectured by the president of the Audiencia Provincial de Alicante (Alicante Province Council), Mr. Vicente Magro Servet.

The lecture series will follow with another session on Thursday March 10 at 19:00 h. in the Municipal Library.

Finally, this couple of weeks of women’s celebration will end in the Municipal Library with “Tales for Equality” storytelling. That will take place on Thursday 17 March at 19:00 h.

Al Marge Espai d'Art

This March, several artistic exhibitions will join Joan Castejón works in Cirne,  Laude Lady Elizabeth high school  students and Ximo Rius and Palmira Rius.

Pego Carnival 2011

The carnival fiestas in Pego are usually organised to be held the first two weeks of March. This year, the days will be Saturday 5thand 12 March.

On Saturday 5^th from 22:30 h to 01:30 h, anyone feeling like partying should put on a fancy dress and meet others like you at Pla de la Font square. The Pato Daniel Orchestra will be in charge of putting the music to the event.

The group will parade across the streets of Pego and will eventually reach Paso de Michel, where a mobile macrodiscotheque and 3 music bands —Euforia, Scream, Montecarlo – will get the party strong and going.

Next Saturday 12th at 23:00 h, people dressed in strict mourning black will gather at the Town Hall square and then parade until Pla del Font. Once there, the pinyata or “entierro de la sardina” —piñata or sardine burial— will take place and the remains of the carnival will be burnt in a bonfire. Later, a fireworks and music show called Nit Màgica will be presented by Xarxa Teatre.

XXII Walking Route Marina Alta Jávea

The XXII Volta a Peu a Xàbia —Jávea walking tour— will take place on Sunday 13^th March 2011. This is the first race that adds for the classification into the XV Circuit a Peu Marina Alta —XV Marina Alta Walking Circuit.

The event starts at 08:00 h. The starting point is the “Miguel Buigues Andrés” Sports Pavillion at Furs Avenue.

The race starts at 10:00 h for adults and at 12:00 h for kids.

The distance for infantile categories ranges from 100 m to 2,000 m. Adults’ is 11 km.

The participation fee for the single race is € 4 and you can sign up now. Requests must be submitted through the Som Esport website.

This part of the circuit is organised by the Athletics Club of Llebéig – Xàbia in association with the Sports Department of the Javea Town Hall.

Ninots Exhibition in Valencia 2011

On 5th February, the Mayor of Valencia, the Falleras Mayores and their court of honour, as well as important figures from the cultural scene in Valencia met in the outdoors area of the Nuevo Centro shopping centre to inaugurate the Ninots exhibition 2011.

The showcase includes 760 ninots on over 1,500 m² dedicated to them.

The exhibition will be open to the public until 14^th March. Anyone attending the event can vote for their favourite ninot. The one with the most votes will be pardoned from being burnt in the bonfire.

Also, the jury will choose a winner on each category: Major and infantile. The prizes can be not awarded.

The commissions will be able to take their ninots back on 15th March.

The opening hours of the exhibition are 10:00 h to 21:00 h, every day.

The admission fee is € 2 for adults and € 1 for retired citizens, kids and members of large groups.

Hernández/Castejón: Painted poetry

From 11^th February until 31^st March, an interesting exhibition will be hosted by CIRN Foundation, at 18 Alicante Avenue, in Jávea.

We highly recommend this showcase of paintings by Joan Castejón, an expressive artist that turns sensations into visual shapes.

This exhibition is called “Hernández/Castejón: La poesía dibujada” —Painted poetry.

Castejón finds inspiration in the verses of the Valencian poet and goes beyond a mere representation of scenes: he defines in painting the poet sensitivity of Hernández like juxtaposed images with dashes of surrealism, mainly in grayscale.

Joan Castejón is an integral artist born in Elche. Part of his history tells tales of repression by the Franco regime, adventuring into theatre, lots of travelling and the earning of a name in the international art scene in the 80′s

The showcase is open to the public Monday through Saturday, from 18:00 h to 21:00 h. Admission is free.

There are two additional exhibitions open in Jávea right now: those of Ximo Zaragoza and Palmira Rius.

18th Sausage Fair in Requena

From 4^th to 6^th March, the eighteenth edition of Muestra del Embutido Artesano y de Calidad de Requena —High quality and traditional Requena Sausage fair— will be held in Requena, Valencia province.

Since last year, this fair (considered the most important winter fair of this kind in the autonomous region) is deemed as a “Festival of tourist interest of the region of Valencia” by the Valencia Agency of Tourism.

Those who come to this event do not limit themselves to discovering and tasting the delicious sausages typical of this town but also enjoy some tourist activities in the region such as wine tours and visits to places of interest like historic castles, monasteries, etc.

Once the participants arrive, they get a “tasting-pass” that will allow them to try a variety of meats including local salami, chorizo, onion black pudding, spicy sausage and new products for every taste and need, such as low-calorie sausages, champagne sausage or gluten-free delicatessen.

This is the first edition of the show after the inauguration of the high-speed train station, so an increase on the amount of visitors is expected, compared to previous editions.

Spanish movies season at Jayan Movie theatre

Every Sunday and Monday, Film Club “Sete Segell” organizes screenings of the best independent and auteur films of the international scene. Most times, movies are screened in original language with subtitles.
