The Cala Sardinera (Sardine Cove) in Javea, in the province of Alicante

This photo of the week shows  the Cala Sardinera (Sardine Cove) in Javea,  in the province of Alicante. It is a cove located on the north side of Cabo San Martin, or Cabo Blanco, a natural cove and practically virgin waters, has a length of 500 meters and a width of 5 meters.

In order to get to the Cala Sardinera you need to gain access  by foot from the Mirador de la Cruz del Portitxol on the road to Cabo de la Nao, along a path that passes through a beautiful pine forest with wonderful views.

Although the path is quite long and windy it is definitely worth the walk as you will see if only to experience a swim at such an unfrequented beach in clear waters. It is the ideal place to spend the day with friends, but remember to bring your own picnic as there are no refreshments near by.

Jávea has a great variety of beaches for all tastes, for those who prefer a sandy beach, the most well known is the Playa del Arenal. Jávea also has an abundance of beautiful coves; here we include some links: Cala La Barraca o Portitxol, Cala Granadella Jávea and Playa La Grava Jávea .

Moors and Christians Denia

From the 10^th to the 16^th of August Denia will be celebrating the Moors and Christians Festival (Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos), in honour of San Roque. This year the Moors are captained by the Filá Amazigh and the Christians by the Filá Mozárabes.

Highlights of this year´s festivities:

- Wednesday  11^th of August: at 11.00 visit to the Residencia Santa Lucia.

- Thursday 12^th of August: at 21.00 the reception on the captain of the Moors at the “Cábila dela  Filá Amazigh”. At 23.00 the festive entrance of the captain of the Moors.

- Friday 13^th of August: 20.30 The captain of the Moors disembarks in the port of Denia. Followed by street parade to the Plaza de Consell where the Treaty of Truce is signed. Later the Dinner of “Acampada” in the Calle la Vía.

- Saturday 14^th of August: at 19.30 kids parade along the Avenida Marqués del Campo, followed by the street bands.

- Sunday 15 August: Gala Parade at 19:00.rmed battles from the port to the Plaza del Consell and 20:00 procession in honour of San Roque.

- Monday, August 16: Mass at 11:30  in honour of San Roque. At 18:15 a

Playa "La Grava" Jávea

The beach known as, “La Grava” in Jávea ( Alicante) is situated at Aduanas del Mar near to the port. It is a gravel beach that is easily accesses on foot and as various facilities such as life guard surveillance, portable toilets, tourism office, parking area, public telephone, promenade, bus, taxi, bar, restaurant, etc.,  It is a  nice beach as it is  not too overcrowded and is 290 long. For many years now it holds the  Blue Flag.
From the gravel beach to Playa del Arenal, if we walk along the coast there are several areas in the breakwater, which are popular for fishing from, but the best thing about this beach are the beach bars that are opened during the summer months, which are a delight , especially at night, by the light of the moon, the torches and the sound and smell of the sea, it’s great.

The Moors and Christians 2010 Javea

The Moors and Christians Festival in Jávea

The festivities continue in Jávea with the “Moros y Cristianos 2010” ( the Moors and Christians ) in honor of  San Jaime  (St. James) from Saturday 10th to Sunday July the 18th  2010, in the streets of the  Duanes del Mar.

This year the captaincy is held by the Filà Baharìs, and the captains are Francisca Marta and Joaquín Garreta.

The celebration is to begin on Saturday July 10th with the inauguration of the XI Medieval Fair (from the 10th to the 14th July), with the firing of the rocket that announces the start of the holidays and the official presentation of Moors and Christians in the Avenida Jaime I in Javea.

On Thursday July the 15th you can behold the re-enactment of the  landing of Moorish troops on the beach (Playa de la Gravea) with the Moorish Ambassador who manage to conquer the Christian Castle of Jávea. On Friday July the 16th the celebration of  the Christian reconquest of the castle. Saturday the 17th at 19:00 the parade through the streets of  Duanes del Mar. The parade takes us through the streets of  Pasaje Pio X, Calle Cristo del Mar, Calle Lepanto   and ends at the Avenue Jaime I. On  Sunday the 18th at 20.00 the parade continues taking the same route as on Saturday. The Moorish Captaincy 2010 of the Filá  Baharis will close  with the magnificent  Grand Parade to be followed by a fantastic display of  fireworks (at 00:00 hours).

Free Organized Walks this summer in Javea

Another great option for leisure time this summer in Jávea besides enjoying all it´s beaches and coves, are the walks free of charge organized by the tourism council of the municipality. There are routes planned for all and we found low and medium difficulty walks  for beginners and high difficulty for experts.

Walking Tour scheduled Jávea July 2010:

- Tuesday, July 13: A walking route to discover the beauty of  Cala Tango (PR-CV-355). Meeting point is at 19:00 from the Municipal Archaeological Museum Soler Blasco. The walk is estimated to  last 1 hour and 30 minutes and is considered a low-difficulty path. They recommend you  bring water, walking shoes, camera and swimsuit.

- Sunday July 18: This hiking route takes us across the  Granadella bay, Castell and  Cala  Variant Teuleria  (CV PR-354). Setting off at  9 am from the parking area in Granadella Cove, you must bring lunch, water, be equipped with good walking shoes, swimsuit and of course camera to capture the wonderful sea views.

- Tuesday, July 20: Hiking route  that takes us around the Cala Barraca SL CV 97. Setting off  from the Mirador Portitxol at 19:00, lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and is considered of low difficulty, as in all  hiking trips it is recommended that you  bring water, proper footwear, swimwear and camera.

Bulls in the Sea, fiestas Denia

Fiestas in Denia from the 3rd to the  11th  of July 2010, festivals and “Bous a la Mar” ( Bulls in the Sea); a tradition declared of National Tourist Interest. This is a show that is held in the mobile bullring year after year in the port; every day you can join in or simply watch  in the morning or in the afternoon. The Bous a la Mar is one of the most anticipated events for all visitors and residents of Denia.
Among the events planned in Denia Fiestas 2010  we would like to highlight:

- Bous a la Mar every day at 13:00 and 19:00 hours in the port of Denia from 4 to July 11, declared a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest.

- Musical Performances: The famous group “Seguridad  Social”,  on Friday July the 9th  at 23:00 and Rosana on Sunday July the 11th  at 22:30.

- “Correfoc”, fireworks and music on Tuesday, July the 6th  at 00:30 am on Calle Marques de Campo.

- Fireworks on  Thursday the 8th of  July at 20:30 along the Calle Marques de Campo and down to La Glorieta.

- Parade of floats,  parades and music with the participation of the Fallas commissions, entities and JLF “Festeros”. An interesting  parade held that has been declared of Touristic  Interest and is being held on Saturday July the 10th  at 19:00.

- A contest , organized by “Arte  Mediterráneo,” in the  Port on Saturday July the 10th  at 23:30.

- Nit de Foc, ( Night of Fireworks), with  fireworks organised by the company Portugues S.L. I n the Port on Sunday July the 11th  after the concert of Rosana.

- Monday, July the 5th a  day with cloudy intervals is expected today and the  probability of rain at around 30%. The temperatures will be at around 31 º C maximum with  minimum of 19 º C.

– Tuesday, July the 6th the cloudy skies  continue in Jávea  but the probability of rain lessens to 20%. The maximum temperature is 31 º C and the minimum is 20 º C.
- Wednesday, July the 7th is expected to be an  overcast day, but fortunately rain is unlikely as the probability of rain is only 20%. The temperatures remain constant making a maximum of 31 º C and a minimum of 20 º C.
- Thursday, July the 8th will be clear skies in the morning with  a cloudy afternoon at intervals. No rain is expected,  maximum temperatures around  29 º C and minimums of 21 º C.
- Friday July the 9th we can look forward to clear skies and sunshine throughout the day in Jávea, the wind will blow light south easterly, the maximum temperatures will be around 32 º C  and the minimum 17 º C.
- Saturday July the 10th we an enjoy sunshine throughout the day in Jávea, the wind will blow light east and temperatures remain constant making a maximum of 31 º C and a minimum of 18 º C
- Sunday July the  11th a sunny day for  Jávea , with  temperatures as high as 31 º C  and  with minimums of 17 º C.

Repsol Best Restaurant Guide

Once again the Repsol  Guide, the Council of Tourism  of the Valencian Community and the Royal Spanish Academy of Gastronomy have  named the best restaurants in the Valencia area.

Among the 20 restaurants awarded Repsol Suns we can find the Restaurante El Rodat in Javea, the Restaurant La Sort in Moraira, Restaurant Casa  Cantó in Benissa and Restaurante Casa Pepa in Ondara. Summer Street Theatre Entertainment in Javea

During the remaining summer  months,  Jávea will be entertaining us with Street Theatre Tours organized by the Tourist Office to make visiting the old town of Jávea even more interesting. It is an innovative and entertaining way of teaching a little about the Town´s history. The Street Theatre offers a outdoor activity for the whole family whilst  being able to learning about Jávea.

If you are on holiday in the town of Javea, Alicante then you are still in time to celebrate to the festival of  San Juan 2010. A “Fiesta” that includes, of course, the traditional burning of the bonfires and effigies.

International Festival of Jávea

International Festival of Jávea: 17,18,19/06

This year  Jávea-Xàbia holds the International Festival on 17th, 18th and 19th of June, 2010 on  the Avenida Augusta , from 18:00, admission is free.

It is a  consolidated event in Jávea which this year celebrates it´s 25th anniversary thanks to the participation of the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Indonesia, England, Italy, Morocco, Palmera, Peru, Poland, Switzerland, Uruguay. And the following associations:  Jávea Casa de Andalucía, the animal protection society  APASA, the Rotary Club Jávea, Thiviers and  the Red Cross Association.

It is a great opportunity to enjoy cultures from around the globe  in Jávea/Xábia (Alicante). The festival offers exhibits,  music (flamenco, jazz, rock, pop ,..), foods from each participating country, workshops games for children, etc. ..

Cala Granadella

Hiking Route Granadella 27/06 -9 hours

During the month of June the  free tours and hiking trails continue to be organized by the Town Hall of Javea. On this occasion they will be walking down to the  Granadella. For everyone´s convenience these walks will take place on Sunday so there is no excuse not to get out and enjoy the wonderful surroundings of Javea and the views that you can admire during these interesting hikes.

- Sunday June 27: Hiking Route Granadella PR-CV 354, the meeting point will be at 09:00 at the car park in the Cala de Granadella.  The approximate length of the route is estimated at 5 hours and is medium-high difficulty.

They recommend to have a good breakfast, to bring food and water and sensible shoes. We also recommend that you bring a camera and a bathing suit so that when you reach the cove you can reward yourself with a refreshing swim in the clear waters  of the Granadella.

Club Nautico of Moraira

The 12th Regularity Championship: 10,11,12/06

From the 10th  to the 12th of June 2010 the  motor boats takes place from the Club Nautico of  Moraira organized by the Spanish Federation Motonáutica and  with the collaboration of the Federación de Motonáutica de la Comunidad Valencia, Club Náutico Moraira, Formentera Mar and with  the sponsorship of the Town Halls of Formentera and Teulada.

The Championship consists of a single test where the route (of approximately 70 miles), takes the boats across from the Port of Moraira to the island of Formentera.  Motor boats can participate with a minimum length of 8 meters. The Skipper´s Meeting will be held on Wednesday 9th June at 20:30.

Playa del Arenal beach

For those of you who are planning your holiday and have chosen Jávea in the province of Alicante, we have included some comments about  the beaches and coves that you can enjoy. That way you won´t find out too late that the  Playa del Arenal beach, is not the only beach available. The Arenal is a wonderful beach  and has many cafeterias and restaurants, but there are other less commercial beaches and coves that you can explore.

Whether you are a  family, a couple, if you like sports or simply sunbathing there is bound  to be a beach or cove to suit you in Jávea, as there are 9 in total.

If you are a family with  young children then the Arenal beach is probably the most recommendable due to it´s fine sand and it´s proximity to shops, restaurants, ice cream parlors,  etc.

If you like water skiing, windsurfing, sailing or a riding on jet-ski then the best beach for you is the  Muntanayar I beach. If you prefer to dive, then your  ideal beaches would be the  Pope or Tangó for their impressive underwater scenery at the foot of Cabo San Antonio.

If you do not mind a bit of a walk  and you like secluded coves, then Jávea is a paradise, there are so many to choose from: Granadella Ambolo, La Barra or Portitxol, Cala Sardinera, Cala Blanca and La Grava. The best known cove is the Granadella which has a car parking area and  a bar that makes a very good paella.

Well , now all you have to do is go to a tourist office ask for a map and enjoy what the coast  of Jávea has to offer.

The 3rd Mediterranean Festival

The 3rd  Mediterranean Festival  (III Festival Mediterrani) to be held in Valencia from May the 29th  to June the 30th  2010. The  president of the festival is Zubin Mehta; the festival holds a month of opera, concerts, chamber music, recitals, lectures, dramatic reading, cinema and many other activities Valencia.

Amongst  the extensive programme  of the Third Edition of the Festival of Mediterrani, we  highlight:

- Richard Strauss´ opera Salome, musical drama in one act with the accompaniment of the Orchestra of the Valencian Community, a new production of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, performances on the 10th , 16th , 22nd  and 25th of June in the Main Hall at 20:00.

- Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen, opera in four acts, a production of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the representations can be seen on the  18th , 21st , 24th  and 30th  of June at 20:00 hours on the 20th  and 27th of June at 19:00 pm in the Main Hall.

- Concerto for piano, opus 54 by Robert Schumann on May 29th  at 20:00 pm in the Auditorium.

Jávea Tennis Club

For those who like to play tennis and paddle tennis and live in or near Jávea you have probably  already played on the courts of Jávea Tennis Club. Though it is  a private club it also opens it´s doors to non- members. If you are not a member you cannot book in advance, you will need to go the same day and book a court at the office at a slightly higher price than members.

Facilities  at the Jávea tennis club are a fantastic, they have eight clay courts all flood lit, 4 paddle courts with artificial turf, squash court, swimming pool, gym and bar-restaurant. They also have a tennis , paddle tennis and swimming school.Among its most renowned members is David Ferrer Ern. Now club has opened a campaign of selling shares in payment for facilities that are accessible to all club members interested.

Javea Indoor Market

One of the most highly recommended places to visit in  Javea is the Municipal Market, also known as Food Market.

Javea Municipal Market is located in the former convent of the nuns in the old part of town since 1946, it´s design and architecture is typical of the area. It´s  exact address in Plaza Celestino Pons s /n Javea.

It has 800 sq metres dedicated to the sale of interesting typical produce, for example: meats, cheeses, cold/cured meats and poultry, seafood, fruits, vegetables, pickles, preserves , breads, pastries,cakes, bar / cafe , frozen food and cleaning products.

The association of the  municipal market of  Jávea often set up interesting stands to encourage shopping in the market and  show their appreciation of the loyalty of their customers. During the month of May, for example, they have prepared a very pleasant surprise, a ham tasting, where they will teach the customers to differentiate between types of  ham, like the  Iberico ham or the Recebo ham. And they will also be doing a demonstration how to carve the ham.

Activities for children Javea

During the month of May 2010 in the town of Javea in Alicante province they will be holding reading and theatre  activities  for children, to encourage them to read and appreciate the arts.

- Friday May 14th at 18:00 pm in the Public Library of Jávea, Stories for children. They will be  reading stories of  Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book and The Man Who Would be King, winner of Nobel Prize Literature in 1907.

- Saturday May 15th at 17:00 pm in the , puppet show, representing the story of  SLEEPING BEAUTY, by the Globus Theatre troupe, will perform two sessions, the first at 17:00 and the second at 18:30.

- Friday May 28th at 18:00 hours at the public library the latest edition of Stories for Children, with the celebration of the closing event called Storytime.

“Punt Point” is designed for those who wish to learn Spanish or English through conversation. This innovative idea was proposed by “Monjove” and is to take place at the Cultural Centre in Jávea town centre. These conversations are aimed at young people between the ages of 12-17 years who would be interested in learning to speak another language whilst chatting about their chosen topics,i.e. Music, sports, trends,latest technologies etc.

The conversations will last approximately 45 minutes in each language and will help you to perfect you foreign language whilst helping others to do the same. They are to be held on Thursdays from 18:30 to 20:00 and on the 11th and 25th of March,  April the 22nd  and May the 6th.

A great option for a cheap holiday in Moraira

A great option for a cheap holiday in Moraira is the Albergue Moraira ( Hostel), 13 km from Jávea. It is located on the Camino del Campamento nº 31, 30724-Moraira, only 200 m from the sandy beach and from the L´Ampolla Castle Tower and 500m from the town centre.

Has a total capacity for 130 people and features workshops with room for up to 60 people, cafeteria vending machines, heating, sports court, pool,  rented sheets, audiovisual equipment and is payable by card. You can make reservations on line, though you must have the YHA membership card.

For nature lovers and walkers,we are including here some information on free guided walking trails for Spring 2010. These trails have  been prepared by the Conjcejalía de Medio Ambiente de Teulada, Alicante. (Department of Environment.)

The first route “Via Verde del Río Serpis: Lorxa-Villalonga” will take place on  April the 24th, 2010. This trail is  a route classified as being of medium difficulty and with a distance of 15km.

On May the 22nd  2010, they have organized a new route through the  Vall D’Ebo to the Vall d’Alcala. However,  this time it is a route of medium-high difficulty and requires a little more physical preparation that the previous trail. This route is approximately  14 km long.

To join in on either of the trails, the meeting point is at the Teulada Town Hall Square. The departure time is at 08.30  and the return time is estimated to be at 16.30. It is important to   bring  appropriate footwear, sports equipment, water and food.

To register for the free hikes organized by the Town Hall of Teulada ; put your name down by phoning  on  965 740 158 or 966 490 976 . It is advisable to put your name down to be guaranteed a place as they are limited to 50 people.

Investing in property on the North of the Costa Blanca to  secure a profit by renting it out continues to be  an  interesting option under  the current economic circumstances. The most interesting real estate product  to buy at the moment is probably an independent  villa on the Costa Blanca with private pool and if possible with a view to the sea.

Today´s tourists that come to enjoy their holidays on the Costa Blanca tend to choose, (according to information gathered from various rental management companies)  a detached villa with private pool and sea views.Preffering them to be  in tourist areas with fine dining, near  yacht clubs, golf courses and exciting leisure facilities: a tandem that allows them fun and intimacy.

On the 22 of April 2010 Jávea celebrates World Book Day with a second hand book fair at the Plaza del Convento ( where the weekly market is held).

Nearly all year round the children of Jávea are fortunate in having Storytelling afternoons. On Friday the 23rd of April, World Book Day, the little ones will be treated to Storytelling at 18.00 at the Public Library.

On the same afternoon at 18.30, also at the Public Library there will be a poetry recital of Miguel Hernandez and other poems to music; a concert organized in collaboration with the International Section of the Public Library.

The storytelling is to continue throughout the whole month for children:

- Friday, April 30 at 18:00: at the Public Library. Classic Children’s Tales of Hans Christian            Andersen.

- Friday, May 7 at 18:00: Kipling´s Stories at the Public Library.

If you are on the Northern part of the Costa Blanca this April 2010 then don´t miss the festivities taking place in the town of Teulada. Here is the programme of activities.
- From  the 7 to April 18, 2010 the festivities are held in honour of San Vicente Ferrer the Patron Saint of  Teulada. This year is especially important as it  coincides with the 600th anniversary of the arrival of the Saint to the village.

- From 15 to April 16, 2010 they are holding the 9th Great Exhibition of Spanish Wines in the Tennis Club Solpark (Moraira). Wine tasting and free entry.

- Café Theatre on Thursday April 22, 2010, with a performance from”Tres i no res” with “Amb lo fácil que sería portar una vida normal” ( how easy it would  be to live a normal life,) at 20:30, free entrance.

- On Saturday April 24 at the Town Hall square and adjoining streets,  they have programmed a race beginning at 16:00 hours, and organized by the Festival  Commission and Athletics Club “Corremundos”.

- Also on  Saturday April 24 2010  you can join in the hiking route of Vía Verde del Río Serpis: Lorza-Villalonga, , organized by the Environmental Department.

- The Great Circus of the Saxophone and Clarinet show is to be held at the Town Hall Square on Friday, April 30, 2010, Nanotram activity by the group “Circo Psicario”

Exhibition Halls

When we move to a coastal town like Jávea in the province of Alicante, most of us think of going to the beach, sunbathing, eating well and spending the afternoon relaxing on a terrace. However, this does not necessarily apply to all of us, so here we are including some information about Jávea´s Exhibition Halls, the old town  for those who also enjoy a walk in the afternoon,to discover it´s history and culture. In this aspect  Jávea has much to offer, continuous exhibitions, concerts, contests, etc. ..

Here are some of the Exhibitions we recommend:

- Casa del Cable, located on la Avenida de la Marina Española nº7.

- Casa de Tena, on the street  Carrer Major nº 43.

- Museu Soler Blasco in the square Plaza Hermanos Segarra nº 1, exhibition of underwater archaeology.The  Exhibition Halls visiting hours are from Tuesday through to Saturday from 10 to 13 and from 17 to 20h, Sundays and public holidays are open from 10 am to 13 pm, Mondays closed.

Jávea also features The House of Culture in the Plaça de Baix n º 6, winter hours are Monday through to Thursday from 8.00 to l5.00 and from 16.00 to 2l.00  and Fridays from 8.00 to l5.00 and from 17.00 to 22.00.

Saturday from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 17.00 to 22 .00. Summer Hours: Monday through Friday from 8.00 to l5.00. Mondays and Wednesdays from 17.00 to 20:30.

Rental advice apartments Costa Blanca

If you have an apartment on the Costa Blanca in Javea, Calpe, Cumbre del Sol in Benitachell,or any tourist area  and wish to make the most out of it by renting during the Summer months , but are reluctant due to fear of  damage or non-payments ;then allow us to give you some tips to prevent this from happening:

- In preparing the leasing contract make sure it includes an inventory of the household appliances and their condition  signed by both parties,( may also include photos.)

- If you are going to rent to holidaymakers  for short periods then request a deposit equivalent to twice the monthly rent agreed upon, (especially if your apartment is fully equipped with furniture, appliances, etc.. )

- Remember to check  and go through house with the tenant  on the same day the contract ends. If  you notice any damage then the repairs must be made and deducted from the deposit in accordance with the invoice.

- The deposit requirement is law under Article 36  of la Ley 29/1994 de 24 de noviembre de Arrendamientos Urbanos.

- Of course, it is also wise to obtain insurance covering the home and it´s tenants .

If all of this sounds too complicated or you do not find yourself in the country for long enough to manage it all; then why not hand over the responsibility  to a  rental management company?. We recommend the company Salco La Cumbre which has  two offices that can be found on the Urbanization the  Cumbre del Sol  in the district of  Benitachell, at  about 7 km from Javea.

This year the theme park Terra Mitica in Benidorm is open as from March the 6th and will remain open until the 18th of December 2010.

Everything is ready for you to enjoy the fun at the leisure park in Benidorm for the 2010 season with many new features.

In Jávea or Xábia (Alicante) there are several car rental companies as it is a tourist town and many visitors arrive by plane and  need to rent a car to be able to get about during their stay.

This British Car Hire Company can be found  in Jávea,  Avenida Jaime I 1, 16. They speak English and Spanish and have a 24 hour customer service. They  also have valet service for cars at the airports of Alicante and Valencia and continually renew their fleet of cars  which are equipped with air conditioning, central locking, CD, and rather unusually their cars do not display the typical “Rent-A-Car” sticker as Autos Javea believe that this gives their customers  more security.

Discover the day to day images of Jávea through this exhibition open to the public until the 11th of April in the House of Tena in Jávea ( Casa de Tena).It is an exhibition with unpublished images ofJávea / Xàbia. The exhibition contains the best shots of the photo contest “Xàbia, Sustainable Spirit” organized by people in the group of tourism of the  Agenda Local 21.

128 photographs of the real Jávea showing us a less known side. These photographs give a whole new slant on what Jávea has to offer, showing that it is not just about the sun and the beach.

The organization came up with the idea for the contest  to reflect what the  sustainable spirit of Jávea is about. Showing images of it´s people, the everyday aspects, the relationship of peole with nature, culture, sports, gastronomy and traditions or customs.

La Casa de Tena is on Carrer Major No 43 in Jávea and the opening hours are  fromTuesday through to Saturday from 10:00-13:00 h and 17:00 to 20:00 on Sundays and  during holidays it only opens mornings  10:00 to 13:00 hours.

Guided walking tour of Sierra D´Orxeta

On 27 March at 08:30 hours we have a new opportunity to get to know the province of Alicante, with the Guided Walking Tour of Sierra D’Orxeta , organized by  the  Concejalía de Medio Ambiente of Teulada Town Hall, the route is guided and the  free of charge.

A bus will collect all those who have previously registered from the Town Hall Square of Teulada  to the town of Orxeta. To register you need to contact the municipality of Teulada, the phone numbers are 965 740 158 966 490 976.

I’ve been asking about this route and I managed to find out that is is still in the  stages of approval but is considered of medium difficulty. As general information  I can tell you that  Orxeta is within the  province of Alicante, with an area 25 km ² and an altitude  of 177 meters above sea level. It boarders  the municipalities of Sella, Finestrat and Villajoyosa, El Campello, Busot and Relleu.

I have been told by those who have had the opportunity to take this hiking route that the best  views are from the Puig Campana, Sierra de Aitana, Amadorio Reservoir and the panorama of the coast from Calpe to Villajoyosa. Do remember to take a camera as you will certainly want to capture these fantastic views.

The new eco-park of Javea

If you live or spend the summer in Jávea, you be interested to know that since the  16 th of February 2010 the municipality has a new eco-park located in the Camí Les Sorts, between the  water treatment plant and the dog pound. At this Eco-park you may deposit all types of household waste and rubbish free of charge to all residents of  Jávea.

In the new eco-park of Javea you are allowed to dispose of numerous types of waste that cannot be deposited in ordinary containers such as cooking oil, scrap metal, x-rays, light bulbs, building rubble, ink cartridges, appliances, mobile phones, batteries, paint, garden clippings or debris .

The eco-park schedule is Monday through to Saturday from 8.00 to 20.00 hours. The park will be monitored to avid people using it for industrial purposes or  by anyone outside the Jávea community.

Another invaluable service offered in Jávea is that of home collection ; if you have any home or garden waste that needs to be disposed of then call 900 102 149 and they will collect it free of charge.

The theatrical route Javea

On Saturday March 20th, 2010 at 11:00 pm there will be  another street theatre show through the streets of town of Jávea.

The theatrical route will be on foot and allows us to discover the town of Javea through emblematic characters and historical landmarks: A journey inspired by the legacy of tales, legends, stories and fantasies of a town which through these enactments they hope to transmit to new generations, visitors and residents of Jávea.

A guided tour featuring actors, who narrate the history of the town of Jávea as you walk through the old town and discover it´s most interesting monuments and places of interest. The walk will take you through  significant periods in the history of Javea and tell us about the historical, artistic and anthropologist changes experienced by those who have lived the area.

The theatrical route will take place on Saturday March 20th in Jávea at 11:00 h starts at the Tourist Office Xàbia Centre,(Oficina de Turísmo Xábia Centro), and will take about 1 hour and 30 minutes. You will need to register first at one of the tourist offices  in Jávea telephone numbers: 965 794 356 / 965 790 736 / 966 460 605. The price for attending the Jávea theatrical routes are € 4 for adults, 2 € children, children under 8 are free.

Here we provide you with a list of the events at the  Fallas that you would not want to miss if you’re going to Valencia, we are focusing mainly on the special Fallas that are the most spectacular.

The Town of Denia Celebrate the Fallas

In the town of Denia (Alicante) Fallas are a tradition, from the 16th  to the  19th  of  March a total of 11 committees plus the Local Fallera Board will  fill the town with monuments.

One of the most spectacular parts of the Fallas  in Denia are the  firework displays and the mascletaes , although one of the most popular events is the offering to the Virgen de los Desamparados, many visitors who come are fascinated by the typical costumes.

Another positive point of the Denia Fallas is that you can comfortably walk around all the Fallas monuments, and the atmosphere on the streets makes it very pleasant.

Currently there are 12 Fallas in Denia; there is the Centre one,   Les Roques,  Mar Baix, Oeste, Port-Rotes, Saladar, Diana, Paris-Pedrera, Darrere del Castell, Campaments, Camp Roig and the Falla of the Local Falla Board.

If you have not ever been to the “fallas”, you have the opportunity to do so these holidays in Denia.

Be sure not to miss the most spectacular event of all , which involves the burning of these huge monuments  on the eve of March 19th  2010 at 24.00.

Views from the Montgó

The views from the summit of the Montgó towards the bay of Jávea are impressive, they are stunning views of the entire Marina Alta.

The Montgo was declared a Natural Park in 1987 and there are several marked trails follow across this natural landscape.

The photo shows a view of Jávea, an incredible panoramic view that one must see in person, but in order to do so one has to take the path that leads to the top. The Town Hall  of Jávea organizes free guided tours to the top of Montgó.

Make sure you don´t forget the camera as you will definitely want to take home a souvenir of these magnificent views that stretch all the way to  the island of Ibiza, and across to Cabo de San Antonio and to Cap Prim.

Port of Jávea

Jávea Port, is situated at the foot of the cliffs of Cabo San Antonio,with a spectacular back drop of 170 metre high cliff face. This unique location provides a beautiful setting good  protection from the elements which is only slightly marred by the occasional easterly wind.. It is divided into three zones: the fishing port by the entrance, the recreational boats area straight ahead and the protective dam to the east. The diesel station can be found in the fishing area.

On the Javea Port esplanade they annually hold, “Living Chess,  ” on the last Saturday of the month of July.

The fish auction held in the port of Jávea and the arrival of the ships has also become one of the main tourist attractions of the town.

The town of Jávea is organizing their first Paseo Gastronómico

From the 4th to the 14th of  March 2010 you will be pleased to know that the town of Jávea is organizing  their first “Paseo Gastronómico,”which  could be loosely translated as a , “Gastronomic Stroll.” It is organized by the Association of  Gastronomic Restaurants of  Xàbia, Jávea and consists of 15 restaurants  which will offer a tasting menu at a single price of 30 €,  for the duration of 10 days, at the regular times of each restaurant.

It is an opportunity to enjoy such spectacular and typical dishes of Javea such as  gilthead in salt crust, casserole of monkfish, octopus salad, fish casserole, honeyed rice with lobster, cruet fish with basil, stuffed squid, etc.. Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy Match Race Championship 2010

In March 2010 the Club Náutico de Jávea organizes the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy Match Race Championship 2010 from the  4th to 7th of  March, an ISAF Grade 2 trophy.

The official announcement of the race has already been published, organizations permitted are Jávea Nautical Club and the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV) under the jurisdiction of the International Federation of Sails (ISAF) and  backed by the Federation of  the Valencian Sailing Community (FVCV).

The regatta will be held in Javea, Alicante, Spain from 2nd to 7th March 2010, designated as ISAF Grade 2 event and RFVE grade 1.

The boat chosen to sail in this regatta is a TOM 28, with mainsail, jib and spinnaker, the number of crew per vessel, including the pattern is four.

The event will consist of Round Robins, quarter-final and final. The course will be windward / leeward with starboard rounding, finishing downwind, the course area  intended is the bay of Alicante.

Cala Granadella is a lovely cove with pebbles and rocks

Jávea / Xàbia is a tourist destination of great importance to the Costa Blanca,  the main attractions being it´s climate, it´s beaches and coves.

Granadella Cove is located along one of the most beautiful coastlines of Jávea and I  recommend that you visit it. The Granadella is  a beautiful rocky cove of about 220 meters in length. It is at the southern end of the municipality of Jávea next to the Granadella Castle.
A beach with crystal clear water, as you can see in the picture. The blue flag is verification of  the quality of it´s waters and it´s services.

You can  reach it by car, and  there is a parking area. Rent a beach umbrella or  hammock and avoid having to carry cumbersome beach gear. The highlight of  the bay are the bars that we will find where they cook a variety of fresh fish and delicious paellas to accompanied by  refreshing sangria.

The Gothic church / fortress of San Bartolomé, Javea

To walk along the streets of the historical old town of Jávea is a pleasure that is sadly known to very few tourists. Many of them are not even aware of the old town´s existence.

The centre of the old town of Jávea is full of history and dates back to Medieval Christian times and the beginning of the 14th Century. The streets are narrow and the houses have white façades decorated with the native Tosca stone and Gothic style windows.

There are many sights to see and visit from the Gothic church/fortress of San Bartolomé ( 14th to 16th Century), to the Municipal Arqueological Museum located within an old town mansion. One can also visit the local covered market , the humble peasant´s houses from the 15th Century and the rambling mansions of the rich traders families from the 19th Century.

Among the Gothic houses one can find the, “Palau dels Sapena,” from the 14th Century and the, “Casa dels Bolufer”, “Casa de Primícies”, “Casa Abadía”, “Casa de la Senyoreta Josefina” , the ,“Casa de Montalbán”, and the “Casa de Tena,” built in 1857 and rehabilitated recently as an exhibition hall.

Whilst strolling about the historical town of Jávea have no fear of going hungry as it has a wide range of restaurants, cafeterias and shops to choose from.

Next Saturday, February 20 th the Town of Jávea is  presenting the, “Moviemiento Slow Food Marina Alta,” ( Slow Food Event on the North of the Costa Balnca), at 17:30h  in the, “Casa de Cultura,” (the House of Culture) in Javea.

This event will teach us what the concept of, “Slow Food” is all about.

It  is a worldwide event that takes a lot of  it´s  influence from the Marina Alta  ( Northen part of the Costa Blanca) and defends a philosophy of life linked to the pleasure of enjoying the flavours  from the local produce in a responsible manner. This idea closely follows the  proposal  by the Town of Jávea to sustain a healthy lifestyle.

The hiking route PR CV 354 Javea

For the 14th of February 2010, the Town Hall of Jávea are organizing a hiking tour of the PR CV 354 of Jávea ( Alicante). The route will cover the Cala Granadella-Castell-Variante Gurugú.

It will take approximately 3 hours and is thought to be of medium difficulty.

There is no need to have previously enrolled, just be at the Granadella beach parking lot on the 14th of February  2010 at 09.00h, which is the set off point.

It is advised to wear sensible shoes and clothing and to water and something to eat. Also, recommended to bring a camera so as to take home some photographs of the magnificent views  out to sea.

The route runs along the forest reserve of the Granadella PR CV 354 which borders the Urbanization of the Cumbre del Sol found within the municipality of Benitachell in the Province of Alicante. It is an area that stretches down to the Mediterranean Sea  and is considered of great environmental importance and of scenic and cultural interest.

The beauty of this route lies in the combination of the sea and the mountains with magnificent views of the cliffs, the Montgó , the valley and the bay of Jávea. The route encompasses the Granadella, Castell Granadella and the Granadella and Levante view points, it is considered to be a hike of medium difficulty.

The Pego Carnivals 2010 Alicante

These are probably  the most renowned Carnivales in the Alicante Province. People travel from all over the area to enjoy these festivities.

The main attractions are of course, the costumes , the music and the general festivities. These will commence on Saturday the 13 of February 2010 in Pego at 23.00h in the “Pla de la Font” ( the square with the fountain). The orchestra “EUFORIA” will be the first to start the entertaining. After which the parade will continue to the Paseo de Michel where the orchestras, “MONTECARLO”and “VERTIGO” will be performing. There will also be DJs and  huge, “Mobile-Discos,” to keep everyone dancing.

The “Sardine´s Funeral,”( ENTIERRO DE LA SARDINA), will take place on Saturday the 20th of February at 23.00h. Everyone is to dress in mourning and to meet at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento ( the Square by the Town Hall). The  mourners will  parade all the way to the Pla de la Font ( the square with the fountain) where they will then light the bonfire.

At 00.30h the, “Corre fuegos,” del Grupo Lésclat will commence. These are pyrotechnics that run through the streets with fireworks and bangers etc.

Probably the best way to enjoy the Pego Carnivals 2010 is to enquire about the bus timetables that will run from the various towns of the area. It is is the most convenient way by which to get there and thereby avoid having to find parking.

Weekly market in Javea

The Jávea market takes place every Thursday of the year, apart from festive days, in the square  by the Instituto called , “ Plaza de la Constitución”, popularly known as , “El Buit”.

These very typical markets are  found in the streets or squares of  villages within the Alicante Province. These markets are a great  place to buy fresh fruit and vegetables at reasonable prices. One can also find salted fish and meat products, household items, shoes, clothing and leather goods.

The weekly markets held in the surrounding villages of the area are as follows:

• Monday: Callosa d´en Sarria, Denia and Santa Pola.
• Tuesday: Alicante, Altea, Benidorm and Orihuela.
• Wednesday: Benidorm, Campello, Ondara and Teulada.
• Thursday: Alicante, Jávea and Villajoyosa.
• Friday: Alfaz del Pi, Dénia, Moraira, Gata and Torrevieja.
• Sábado: Alicante, Benissa, Jalón ( flea market) and Calpe.
• Domingo: Teulada ( flea market) and Valencia.

To amble along the streets where the markets are held  and to see all the different market stands and produce, the bartering and to absorb the typical market atmosphere is an interesting pastime and a way to acquire an understanding of the Alicante region.

Hiking Tour Sierra Maigmo (Tibi)

On the 12th of February the Town Hall of Teulada are organizing  a  guided hiking tour  within their environmental  programme free of charge. The tour will encompass the PRV-84 Sierra del Maigmó ( Tibi) and is considered to be a medium to hard  hike  of 12 km. The hike will set off from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Teulada ( The Town Hall Square)  at 08.30h  and will end at approximately 17.30h.

The Vía Verde, Sant Vicent del Raspeig-Alcoy, the Reservoir at Tibi, L´estret, the Cold Cave, the Peaks of Maigmó ( 1,296m) and the Despenyador ( 1,261m) are some of the places regarded as being of most interest  on the hiking routes of PRV-84 Sierra de Maigmó ( Tibi).

The entire hike would cover a distance of 21.9km, however the route proposed by the Town Hall of Teulada intends to cover 12km by taking a short cut through Tibi.

If you are a nature lover then you may be interested in attending the meeting being held on the 11th of February  2010 at 20.00h about the  birds that are native to the area. The conference,”Las Aves del Municipio de Teulada” presented by Elías Gomis Martín ( SEO-Alicante), is to be held in the assembly hall ( salón de actos)  at the Casa Municipal de Cultura  de Teulada.

Flamenco Festival in Valencia, El Cigala

The renowned Flamenco Festival will take place again this year with a new and exciting line up of shows at the Palau de la Música in Valenica from the 30^th of January to the 19^th of February 2010.

The 2010 programme offers a blend of styles and artists, including internationally recognized artists and up and coming ones from the local flamenco scene. It is set to surprise the audience with a show ranging from the purest of flamenco styles to the most contemporary.
