The Gothic church / fortress of San Bartolomé, Javea

To walk along the streets of the historical old town of Jávea is a pleasure that is sadly known to very few tourists. Many of them are not even aware of the old town´s existence.

The centre of the old town of Jávea is full of history and dates back to Medieval Christian times and the beginning of the 14th Century. The streets are narrow and the houses have white façades decorated with the native Tosca stone and Gothic style windows.

There are many sights to see and visit from the Gothic church/fortress of San Bartolomé ( 14th to 16th Century), to the Municipal Arqueological Museum located within an old town mansion. One can also visit the local covered market , the humble peasant´s houses from the 15th Century and the rambling mansions of the rich traders families from the 19th Century.

Among the Gothic houses one can find the, “Palau dels Sapena,” from the 14th Century and the, “Casa dels Bolufer”, “Casa de Primícies”, “Casa Abadía”, “Casa de la Senyoreta Josefina” , the ,“Casa de Montalbán”, and the “Casa de Tena,” built in 1857 and rehabilitated recently as an exhibition hall.

Whilst strolling about the historical town of Jávea have no fear of going hungry as it has a wide range of restaurants, cafeterias and shops to choose from.
